The mother-daughter team behind sydney flower school

Sydney Flower School - Flower Class Bouquet

For Judith and Kylie Browne, the Mother-Daughter team behind the glorious Sydney Flower School (which is holding Christmas wreath-making classes this month!), working together only has one downside: distraction. “We might like to chit chat,” Kylie tells me. “We like to call it brainstorming. Before we know it we may have lost an hour (or even an afternoon!)”.

With their festive flower classes in full swing right now – and leading all the way up to Christmas Eve, I grabbed five minutes with these busy Creatives to not only find out more about their classes (I have to attend one), but more about the business, their love of flowers and the benefits of working with family.

“It’s far less challenging working with family because we really know one another,” Judith tells me. “We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This works to our advantage because Kylie and I both have different skill sets”.

Those skill sets are pretty wide and varied, too. While Kylie’s career in visual merchandising and event styling gives her a both a flair for and understanding of the floral aesthetic, Judith’s career in the floral industry spans three decades, having worked as operator of her own floral shop and teacher at TAFE’s across the state.

The experience has certainly seen her meet a lot of people over the years.

“We have a bit of an in-joke,” Kylie says. “That it takes us twice as long for a flower market visit due to her being approached so often by all the people who know her & want to catch up”.

This passionate mother-daughter team run all sorts of flower classes, from the Christmas wreath and garland ones mentioned above, to their famous Flower Market Tour and Breakfast, which gives real insight into picking the best flowers in an often overwhelming market atmosphere.

As a huge fan of all things Christmas, I’m most excited about their variety of festive classes that are running now; a real chance to immerse yourself in the silly season and it’s wondrous styling.

“I’m really excited about the Christmas series we have planned,” Judith explains. “I would love people to move away from mass produced, artificial Christmas decorations and come and learn the simple techniques for making their own gorgeous and unique fresh door wreath, garlands and table centrepieces”.
