My Sweet Prints: Charming Wall Art for your Home
I go bananas when it comes to cute art for the home – and none has given my interior more love and life than those from Aussie brand My Sweet Prints. The local biz just turned five this week gone by, so I thought it timely that I show you just how stunning their unique prints are – and chat to the lady behind the store, Janette Baker.
Despite My Sweet Prints rising to decorator fame over the past five years, Janette still refers to it as “my little business”, which further illustrates just how charming this creative endeavour really is. She tells me how much she loves seeing snaps on social media – of the prints in customer’s homes, adding that she never thought the business would take off like it has when she started it back in 2009.
“I hoped and dreamed and I worked really hard to make it work, but no, when I initially started out it was just a ‘let’s just see how this goes’ type of thing,” Janette explains. “I had no business plan, hadn’t even really worked out packaging, labeling or accounting, I just sorted of jumped right in”.
On what inspires her work, Janette says “basically I just think about what I would want on my boy’s walls or on our walls at home”.
Starting with five initial designs when she started My Sweet Prints, Janette’s art has evolved over time but the design elements have remained the same.
“They were all very simple, typography based, cute and able to be customised for children,” Janette tells me, of the initial prints. “It’s interesting because my range still encompasses those elements, the styles just evolve over time by using different typefaces, colourways and playing with the trends of the moment”.
Sweet, sentimental and feel-good is how Janette describes the My Sweet Prints ethos and I couldn’t agree more. I have the ‘Love you more’ print on my bedroom wall and it conjures up such joy when I look at it each day. Who can say no to a print featuring gold foil, either? Too good!
In terms of what’s next for the brand, Janette looks forward to expanding on her current designs, teasing “let’s just say there will be some beautiful Copper hitting the store soon!”.
