Shakiraaz releases brand new cushions that are bright and beautiful

Shakiraaz cushions - bright geometric pattern

My obsession with cushions is a well documented one (no need for an intervention just yet), so I simply had to share these new releases with you from local business Shakiraaz. Shakira Lima – the talented Melbournite behind the brand – has been labouring away for months on four unique designs, which I’m crushing on like a tween on Beiber and will be showing you today in this colourful post!

The Trellis design above is perhaps my favourite. Shakira tells me it’s inspired by the architecture of Jaipur in India, which she visited recently. Her use of brights and whites is a bold one that really pays off, as these hues are prominent in furniture and homewares going into summer.

“I wanted to do something that celebrates my Indian heritage, but contemporising it and using colours and materials that are more on trend,” she explains.

Above you’ll see the Leaf Print design that I’m also pretty smitten with. Shakira used a hand-cut stencil to create this intriguing tropical pattern and mixed the paint colours herself. The shade on the left is pure magic if you ask me.

“I wanted to do an orange melon colourway; something that I had never done before,” Shakira tells me. “The whole printing process is no doubt laborious but I totally love it! I am lucky as my husband helps me out, especially during screen printing while my two babies (my cats Misty & Pepper) watch on”.

Below: With Christmas just around the corner, Shakira created this look “inspired by pines that I had picked up during one of my trips in regional Victoria,” she says.

The Medallion Series Block Print above is also a clear standout from the collection and utilises on-trend fluoro colours against rustic Russian linen. The inspiration came from carvings Shakira saw on a temple in Chennai; she snapped photos at the time and was intent on implementing a similar vibe into some cushions. “Finally a year and half later I have,” she laughs.
