Check out the New Kmart Home Drop (and a Rant About Budget Brands)

I saw someone on social media recently say, “Who would pay an interior designer to put Kmart or IKEA in their home?”. Well, lots of people, lady! In fact, most of my clients to be exact.

I’ve also seen a tonne of designers in my time turn their noses up at bargain furniture brands. And it, to be quite frank, grinds my gears.

You see, there’s actually a place for every brand. For every designer. For originals and replicas (yes, replicas!). And for high-end splurges and the budget chains. This medley of different design moments is what makes a home so amazing. And to be completely honest, it’s what my brand has been built on. And I’m currently drowning in clients! Would I buy all-Kmart for a client?

Of course not. I don’t go to any one store to get everything. But you can bet your bottom dollar I often get smaller decor pieces from Kmart to finish off rooms. I did it just the other week for my Bentleigh project.

These absolute steals sit alongside pieces from suppliers like Calibre and Globewest (their latest drop is stunning too), and they all work marvellously together. You see, it’s really all about having an eye for blending an array or pricepoints together, not how much a piece costs. Drizzle in some of your keepsakes and mementoes and we have a beautiful space full of variety.

And here’s the reality: some people honestly can’t afford an original handmade piece of furniture. Should they miss out on having a nice home? Of course not! That’s where brands like Kmart come into play. They also come into play for those of us who want phenomenal pieces at a great price (who doesn’t love a bargain?).

So to both consumers and designers who like to diss the discounts, I say… please do it elsewhere. If you’re a slave to brand names and are desperate to keep up with the Joneses, you’re not my ideal client.

And with that rant over, let’s take a look at some of the new Kmart furniture and homewares pieces. I know you’re going to love them!

Kmart Furniture and Homewares Drop Celebrates Nature

The new drop from Kmart is all about evoking calm. It’s obvious when you look at the images in this post that a lot of the pieces are quite subdued in colour. There are some soft blue and pink hues at play, but even they are rather dusty and soothing on the eye.

There’s also a celebration of textures in wood grains and in speckled glazed dinnerware. A lot of it feels rather organic, which is reflective of where homes are headed for 2020.

Timber, rattan and macrame feature strongly in this latest Kmart furniture and homewares drop. Most of the hero pieces are in one of those materials. They’re softened by wonderfully plush jacquard leaf towels in a range of colours, and some glorious bedding drops too.

The latest release also features gorgeous amber glass-jar candles in wholesome scents such Geranium and Bergamot, along with Australian flora and fauna-inspired wall art (sounds perfect for a teen girl bedroom!).

My Personal Faves from the Collection

The sublime bedding you see above, paired with that chic bench seat, is pure magic. If you want more go-to suppliers for stunning bench seats, check this post out. It’s an ideal look for a guest bedroom or teen space. You could absolutely rock this look in your master bedroom as well, of course. I often get affordable bedding for client homes and pop it in guest bedrooms. You’d be mad not to.

Also can’t cope over: The white dinnerware set at the top of this post with the black trim and speckled moments throughout. This taps into the Australiana trend something shocking and I want one of everything in the range. I also need a medic over those placemats. If you’re into that classic all-white boho vibe, I’m sure you’re crushing hard.

Special mention also goes to the tan leather-look ottoman at the start of this post. So moody and masculine.

The Gang at Kmart Love your Hacks

Kmart’s Divisional Merchandise Manager for Home, Meryn Serong, said offering stylish products at great prices is important to Kmart’s 40-plus designers and buyers.

“Customers now have incredible choice but we remain consistent with offering quality products at a great price and every season evolving the product in line with customer feedback,” Meryn said.

Kmart Australia’s general manager of general merchandise, Callum Smith added, “We are blown away by the creative ways our customers are using and hacking our products. This inspires us in so many ways and helps apply to future ranges. This season’s range speaks to that and we hope our customers love the styles available as much as we do!”

Can’t resist a wander through the KMart homewares section. They are getting so much better and have new things every month. Fabulous for the kids as new house setter uppers and us others to add some bright new ideas without breaking the bank.

I purchased the Horse print for my bedroom and a Protea print for my lounge, at only $19 each, if I get tired of them, and want to change things up, then I won’t feel bad about wasting money.

Such a great post Chris, couldn’t agree more. Our homes should be a creative space to live (maybe work) and play in and having access to a range of homewares at the lower end from a budget, not design and quality perspective, makes this so much more affordable for all of us. We have used a lot of decor Kmart in our Christmas styling this year. Only 137 sleeps to go!

I agree with you 100%. Good design is good design whether it’s high-end or from Ikea or Kmart. As you say, not everyone can afford expensive pieces but they still like to have a stylish home. Hats off to Kmart I say for making this possible.

i DONT CARE WHERE THE PRODUCTS ARE FROM QUITE FRANKLY. THESE PICTURES ARE DEVINELY EXECUTED.
iN MY OWN HOME I SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF FURNITURE, THEN IN THE NEXT INSTANT SOMETHING WILL CATCH MY EYE, EVEN IT IS CHEAP BUT GOOD VALUE AND VISUALLY LOVELY I WILL BE SURE TO PURCHASE. I DO LIKE TO GROUP SHAPES AND COLOURS.
MY VISITORS ARE ALWAYS SAYING ” YOU ARE ALWAYS SPENDING MONEY” BUT WHAT CATCHES THEIR EYE USUALLY ARE THE SPECIAL CHEAPER BITS LIKE THROWS VASES ETC.
