It was an abnormal love for cushions and a desire to connect with the global community that sparked Sydney friends Lyndie and Eriana to create their Sisterhood cushion range. Their bespoke interior design business – Vanilla Slate Designs – was already a success, but the two felt a desire to get crafty through another medium.
“It became a bit of an obsession to make our own cushions that are modern and fresh, but still have a vintage twist,” Eriana tells me. “I love vintage inspired cushions, but not the type made out of fabric of someone’s school farewell dress of 1930”.
There’s a fun and playful vibe to these two lovely ladies and it’s evident in their cushion designs, which are bright and bold but still retain a soft and feminine feel (with a gentle not to nostalgia).
The celebration of women in these designs was a very intentional one. Lyndie explains that with friends and family all over the world, they wanted to create pieces that gave a shoutout to their global sisterhood.
“These vintage inspired cushions have photos of our mothers, too. They were the first women who taught us the value of friendship and we want to honour them as well”.
Having both studied separately – Lyndie at ISCD and Eriana at Sydney Design School, the pair have also called upon that training when designing this cushion range.
“During my course I have learned about interior design concepts, but we also spent hours mixing paint and presenting colour combinations to fellow students and lecturers,” Eriana explains.
“Our training at our respective design schools and the collaboration with Sydney artist Tanith du Plessis, have made a big difference in the outcome of this vintage range,” Lyndie adds.
Vintage inspired but digitally printed, the cushion designs mesh old and new to create cushions that are like having pieces of art on your sofa. I’m also rather fond of the various colour combinations Eriana and Lyndie have produced, which makes them versatile pieces that’ll work in a variety of interior schemes.
“They will be perfect in a home with a beach theme or modern country style,” Lyndie says. “You will even get away with adding some of the tile design cushions and creating a Bohemian look. The combinations are endless”.
