The September issue of Country Home Ideas magazine has been on stands for a few weeks now, so some of you might have seen my feature. In it, I discuss things you need to be mindful of when you’re selecting wallpaper for your home. Those of you who’re yet to cast your eyes over it, here’s a sneak peek of the spread along with my four big pointers to consider before you buy!
The main thing to keep in mind when it comes to wallpaper is to keep it timeless. Wallpaper is not as easy as paint to throw on – or take off – your walls, so it’s really important to choose a style you can live with for years to come. I see gorgeous, over-the-top wallpapers used in mag shoots all the time, but despite how gorgeous they are on the page, consider if they’ll drive you batty in six months.

Decor and lighting are important factors to keep in mind, too. Look at your room and think about what wallpaper colours and patterns will work with your current scheme, not the other way around. Also consider if the light coming in from a window will make certain textures and finishes shine, or particular colours look a little off. Ask for a sample in-store and stick it to your wall at home to live with it for a little while and see how you feel.
Last but not least, consider the mood you want to create in your room. Wallpaper, like any major decorator item, will effect how you feel in the space, so there’s no point installing hectic wallpaper in a bedroom you intend to feel calm and serene!
