In part one of my The Block ‘Where are they now’ series, I asked the question; why do some teams disappear from our screens and why do others go on to stay in the spotlight? I put it down to hard work, determination and showing enough of yourself that an audience connects with you. You’ve also gotta be pretty likeable too. Case in point is the team I’m catching up with in today’s part 2 post; Kyal and Kara. These guys first graced our screens in last years season, Fans vs Faves and have returned in Reno Rumble, producing some very impressive work so far.

I caught up with Kara to ask her about her season on The Block, how it’s changed her life and what she and Kyal are up to now.
The Block Contestants: Where are they Now, Part 2 with Kyal and Kara
On why the applied to be on The Block…
“We applied because we are addicted to the transformation process of a renovation and wanted to live and breathe that feeling for 12 months. We went down to Melbourne (it was actually Kyal’s first trip there), not knowing anyone and now we feel as though Melbourne is our second home. We love visiting our Melbourne ‘family’ and friends we’ve met along the way”.
What they’re doing now that The Block is over…
“We run a Design and Construct business, which involves assisting people with anything from styling, custom joinery, product selections and renovations. We have been lucky to be involved in some beautiful projects and can’t wait to share some pictures. I still work as a physiotherapist casually. I actually believe there is a great link between a fresh, organised home and a healthy body. I’m looking forward to exploring this further and combining my two passions professionally”.
The downsides to appearing on the show…
“I skipped this question initially because nothing came to my head, so I thought about it a little more, and no, I can’t think of any!”.
Kyal and Kara’s advice to those who want to audition…
“Think of everything you enjoy doing, and things that make you laugh, and include all this in your audition video. Be yourself and have fun. Don’t enter with preconceived ideas about your experience”.
The biggest misconception people have about The Block…
“I don’t think people understand how much you’re left to your own devices. If you don’t organise trades, nothing will be done for you”.
The reality on life behind the scenes on Reno Rumble…
“The show is so fast paced and intense. Definitely more intense than The Block. The audience sees a total one hour per day of the renovations coming together and the transformations almost do seem hard to believe. What isn’t usually shown are the thought processes behind decisions and a lot of the hard work to get to that point. I also don’t think people understand how sleep deprived we all are!”.
