What Is Hamptons Style?

Hamptons style is a coastal-inspired interior design style originating from the Hamptons region of Long Island, New York.

This timeless aesthetic combines calm colours and organic textures, creating a light, ambient feel in rooms.

With a palette inspired by the ocean, and by avoiding expected style cliches, the modern take on this classic effortlessly elevates any space.

Key Features of the Hamptons Style

  • A foundation of neutral tones like whites, soft greys and beiges is seen throughout
  • A medley of blue accents evokes interest in spaces, giving just enough colour without overwhelming the eye
  • A variety of light to mid-toned timbers are used in furniture to keep the interior light and organic in feel
  • A sense of space and airiness is present; clever storage solutions ensure rooms are clutter-free

Creating the Hamptons Look

Colour Palette

Hamptons interiors embrace soft, muted tones, which deliver the calming atmosphere this style is know for. Whites, soft greys, and beiges create a light, airy feel, while occasional touches of blue (and even soft green) evoke the tranquil waters of the coast.
Small pops of black can be seen in smaller accessories, but it’s to be used sparingly.

Furniture

Hampton style furniture is less cliched than it used to be. Gone are the predictably dark
walnut timbers, and in are the lighter oak tones to keep rooms feeling fresh and contemporary.
Lines in furniture have become cleaner and less ornate, but that’s not to say that comfort is compromised. This look is all about usability, showcasing furniture you can sink into and enjoy, with low-maintenance in mind.

Textures & Materials

Linen, cotton, rattan, and light timber are all integral to the Hampton look. These materials are both tactile and visually impressive, enhancing the coastal charm of your space. Natural stone is prominent in countertops, while a combination of matte and gloss tiles are present elsewhere. In hardware the options are quite varied; chrome, brass, matte black and even gunmetal are all suitable for a Hamptons style.

Decor & Accessories

The more modern Hamptons style does away with the nautical artworks, driftwood accents, and glass vases filled with seashells. Now, the approach to decorating is to look to calm patterns, organic shapes and soft furnishings with an earthy feel. We want to give a gentle nod to the coast without overdoing the outdated, expected cliches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Focus on a neutral foundation with your colours, then sprinkle over subtle blue and green shades as accent tones. Embrace light timbers, comfort-driven furniture, and organic soft furnishings and you’re well on your way to evoking the calm needed to achieve Hamptons style.

It’s less obvious and cliched than it used to be. Decor that works in a Hamptons home now is muted in colour, soft to the touch, but with a sense of the earthy and organic to it. Soft furnishings in tactile, plush materials is key too.

It’s all about a neutral foundation. Think white, beige and soft grey on walls and flooring. Furniture should follow suit, but then the smaller accessories and artwork is where the considered colour comes into it – think an array of blue tones and the occasional soft green accent.

A more classic Hamptons style embraces darker walnut tones in furniture, while a modern approach uses lighter oak tones. In pieces like armchairs and sofas, it’s all about comfort-driven choices that feature clean lines.

The beauty of the Hamptons style is that it’s always evolving; it’ll never go out of style. There are a number of directions you can take the style in (classic, modern, luxe etc), and we’ve delivered all of them for our clients over the years.

The clients we work with enjoy discounts off the RRP of products when they have us transform their home. It’s just one of the benefits of engaging us to deliver your dream interior design style.

We use a mix brands for the one project. Once we set a budget for your makeover, it (along with the interior design style we’re going for) helps us determine the best brands to use. We are never wedded to one supplier.

We do! Depending on the extent of the renovation, we collaborate with a range of professionals to achieve the best outcome for your home.
