  1. Hi. I have a beige, upholstered bed with walnut mid century, modern legs. We re-purposed dressers and painted them a pepper black with gold knobs. My question is, should my nightstands have the same walnut finish as the legs to my bed? I’ve seen some walnut mid century, modern nightstands, with a white drawer to which I would add a gold knob. Or, is it OK to go with a light finish wood? Btw, walls are white and have light colored carpet

    1. Hi Pam. Without seeing the room, I’d be inclined to suggest you find nightstands in the walnut finish. That way it speaks to the style of the bed and they all go together as a setting without feeling too matchy-matchy. Then the black dresser is a moment on its own. I would only suggest you bring some black details into the space on a smaller scale so that the colour of the dresser makes sense in the space. Some black in an artwork, or a cushion on the bed, or the base of a lamp etc. Hope this helps.

  3. Hi Chris, I have a black velvet bedhead. Can I pair this with white bedside tables, which have white wicker baskets for drawers?
    Thanks, Heidi.

  4. I gave up looking for bedside tables that had plenty of storage so I bought black 3 drawer metal filing cabinets with curved edges from Officeworks.
Yes they are the same height as my mattress. I have a white enamel brass bed so they aren’t matchy matchy.

  7. Omg I love this post!! I came across this in my inbox at a lovely time as I am looking for bedside tables to go with my king sized velvet tufted button headboard colour Ocean blue from Brosa but lost as to what type of bed head to choose- would really appreciate some advice.

  8. Great post. Too many people go with the standard “bedroom suite” out of habit and this being the comfortable and easy option. This is really helpful in directing how to go about choosing individual pieces that will all make a cohesive, stylish and comfortable room with the desired sanctuary feel. Thanks!

  9. Hi Chris. We have a bed with a black metal frame, white walls and wooden floor. We do have a large light grey rug under the bed. Really can’t decide whether to go with an oak or black bedside, so much so that it’s been 3 years since we moved in and we’re still using cheap ‘temporary’ ones from Kmart! Love all of these tips but confused when it comes to the black metal. Thanks so much.

  10. Chris – thanks for this timely post! I’m in the midst of trying to find new bedside tables to go with my linen-coloured bedframe (button detail on the large headboard). I have mid-dark toned timber floors, and am planning on buying a lighter rug to break them up, but I’m struggling to decide on colours for the bedsides. Obviously going too dark would be too much with the flooring, but maybe a lighter timber tone? Any thoughts appreciated.
