  1. Agree with nearly everything, the butler’s are so far away! Also, what’s with all the ovens and taps? Surely at minimum you’d want a second dishwasher, coffee machine and robo-vac back there!

  2. I’m loving this season of the Block. I really hate how every year the judges find one couple to eviscerate at every opportunity. Fortunately it’s this couple that either wins, or does really well. BEST REVENGE EVER!
    ps. Love your article

  3. Love reading your insights and I totally agree about the high cupboards – I’m not tall but I just get a step ladder out! I’m guessing the only reason the judges didn’t comment on the butler’s kitchen locations was that it would be criticizing the show’s architect rather than the contestants and I’m the past they have liked to make a big deal out of the architect’s plans always being the best and to change them at your peril!

  4. Yes Chris, the butler pantry layout would drive me to drink as well. A pantry behind a kitchen works well. When I first viewed the plans on the TV that was my first reaction of the relative distance. They were a kitchen within a kitchen and a packed lunch would be required for the trip.
I like a kitchen sink overlooking a window in a warm modern country style. House 1 and 4 delivered the brief for me. I can never understand a sink in an island bench.
I also question the sustainability of gas cook tops. Is mains gas already connected or bottled gas used? Someone may know the answer. It will be interesting further into the series.

  5. I think these beautiful country homes would benefit from having some recycled, reused and/or repurposed pieces in the homes. For example, an old sideboard could have been repurposed as a kitchen island. With a bit of imagination and creative design an old piece can be made to be modern and functional whilst still grounding some soul and warmth into a space.
I believe there has been a missed opportunity here for the Block.

  6. Totally agree with comments about the Butler’s Pantry locations – can’t understand why they were designed that way.
Also, judging appears quite skewed toward SJ & T, they have done some lovely work but it’s very stylised and not always practical. I think The Block could do with both new designers and judges!

    1. Personally, I feel that they need a total overhaul or the judges. Sick with 3 but have 1x interior designer, 1x real estate agent and 1x builder. That way it’s not all about the cushions and wallpaper but the overall construction and market viability

  7. I like things in all these rooms but lean towards Jenny and Dylan’s kitchen.
I don’t believe any of those kitchens cost the small amount noted. They are very large with top quality fittings etc. I believe closer to 80K min with butlers pantry’s and appliances would make better sense and be more believable.

  8. oh yes. all those fancy appliances won’t heal the pain of working in a tiny kitchen for such a large house (tom and sarah jane’s island only fitted 3 bar stools, the back benches are super narrow) and having to leg it across to the ‘other kitchen’ to finish the recipie!

  9. I see what you meant about House Five’s island bench cutting across the hallway – so the only island bench orientation that I felt did justice to the eventual kitchen dining living combo is Ankur and Sharon’s. I really did not like the way that the others faced – inwards.
