Boho Interior Design
The new way to execute Boho Interior Design is to turn down the colour, turn up the texture, and channel the light. This creates a calm, ambient interior where neutrals shine, warm timbers bring depth, and tactility is ever-present. It’s easy, breezy and beautiful.
What Is Boho Interior Design?
Inspired by the hippie movement of the 1960s, Boho Interior Design has certainly come a long way since its early inception.
Although Bohemian design originally featured a kaleidoscope of colours, its modern interpretation (at least in Australia), is far more neutral – leaning heavily into the coastal approach of embracing texture over hue.
This design aesthetic is one we’ve implement for many of our design clients due to its bright, ambient and nature-inspired feel; a popular look that bodes well for our relaxed lifestyle.
Key Features of Boho Interior Design
- Layered textures and patterns dominate, with a celebration of all things organic and tactile
- Use of natural materials is king in the Boho Interior Design movement; think wicker, rattan, jute, and more.
- Eclectic decor can bring interest to this simple backdrop; treasured pieces that tell a story really shine in this look, as do handmade items
- A crisp white colour palette is layered with warm wood tones, soft neutrals like beige and grey and the occasional pop of green
- Coastal influences; this is an easy, breezy look that blurs the lines between indoors and out

Layered Textures and Patterns
Texture is everything in the Boho Interior Design style. The medley of materials is what makes it feel so interesting. Because the colour is turned down, furniture and decor that feels organic, earthy and artisanal is the key to keeping the look elevated. It’s that balance of rustic timbers alongside soft organic linens and natural stone that make the Boho vibe so special. Leather and boucle can also be worked in.
Use of Natural Materials
This is not a design style where cold, high-gloss materials are seen. Instead, it’s all about that sense of nature; timber grains are visible, woven details are present, and rustic influences are encouraged. Wicker, jute, rattan, oak, sisal are all welcome in the Boho style, as are breathable linen and cotton. The less processed the materials are (or appear to be) the better.
Eclectic Decor
While the furniture takes its cue from costal design (think slipcover sofas, white sheer curtains and weatherd timbers) the decor you put on top can be rather eclectic. Not only do handmade pieces help you develop more of a story, but keepsakes and mementoes from overseas travels also feel right at home due to their sentimentality. They bring interest to a subdued backdrop, and allow you to personalise rooms in small ways.
Warm Colour Palette
Although the walls in a Boho home are going to be white, and the hard flooring rather light in tone, you can avoid the look feeling sterile by embracing warmth in timbers. The more detail on the timber, the better. You can also introduce tan as an accent colour to bring more warmth to the look, and balance it out with subtle sage green shades if you feel you need some colour. Indoor plants help bring in greenery too.
Coastal Influences
The Boho look is less global and more coastal nowadays. Elements like barn doors, plantation shutters, white sheer curtains and woven wall hangings are welcomed. Look to embellishments in soft furnishings too, like frayed edges and tassels on towels and blankets to deliver interest in small ways. Bring the outdoors in by displaying large-scale indoor plants and flowers on tabletops.
