Art Deco Interior Design
Art Deco Interior Design is an opulent style that channels luxury. It evokes a sense of sophistication in a home through the clever use of colour and material. Interesting patterns and shapes are also embraced, creating zones that feel chic and sophisticated.
What Is Art Deco Interior Design?
The luxurious Art Deco style originated in France in the early 1900s and became internationally appreciated a few decades later. And you can see why.
Today, we do our own take on this popular style, paying homage to its origins while giving it a modern twist.
The new version still explores everything this style is known for: sumptuous materials, strong pattern play, bold colours and a sense of luxury.
However, it’s less cliched and more subtle now; a nod to the classic while allowing it to evolve for our clients.
Key Features of Art Deco Interior Design
- Bold colour palettes; the style loves a pop of pink and a glimmer of gold, however the modern approach is to have these as accents as opposed to en masse
- Geometric shapes are present too, in pieces like cushions, artwork, rugs and wallpaper
- Luxurious materials like velvet, marble, brass and glass give the scheme a distinctly high-end feel.
- Statement lighting is seen throughout this design style, with angular shapes playing alongside softer forms, wall lighting supporting pendants.
- Symmetry is often seen in living spaces, with rooms having a formality to them in terms of orientation.

Applying Art Deco Interior Design In Your Home
Colour Palette
The modern approach to Art Deco interior design is to have a neutral but moody base colour palette. Think rich browns, a medley of greys, beiges and some white. Even a pop of black here and there is welcome. On top, pops of pink and jewel tones are good go-to accents. You’re actually not too constricted when it comes to colour, you just want to ensure the tone is deeper (so avoid pastels, for example).
Geometric Shapes
There are a lot of geometric shapes in Art Deco design, but they’re now used sparingly or in less obvious ways. It could be in a smaller detail like a cushion or rug, but it can also be in the profile of a sideboard door, or in a striking pendant light. Ensure you balance out these stronger, more angular shapes with some soft ones too. Artworks can be abstract and fluid, as can the vein in a marble console or coffee table.
Luxurious Materials
There is a sense of the plush and the plump in Art Deco design when it comes to the furniture. Big, sink-into pieces are essential, but the materials are key too. Sure, velvet is absolutely allowed, but don’t be afraid to also introduce glossy stone like marble and travertine, coloured glass, textured wallpaper and boucle. There’s a femininity to Art Deco interior design, so consider soft sheer curtains for windows, too.
Statement Lighting
Art Deco interior design is all about the statement lighting. There’s no room to play it safe here, and you can really have some fun. Don’t feel you have to go for expected old-world brass, either. In our projects, we do geometric pendant lights, lighting inspired by flowers, and colours glass bulbs on floor lamps. Think of the lighting as the jewellery in the room. You really want it to make a statement.
Symmetry
When we say symmetry, we don’t mean that a sofa in a sitting room needs to have the same sofa sitting across from it. The approach is to create balance in a space; there is a sense of formality. Have two armchairs across from a sofa, for example. Or, have the same wall light either side of a painting down the hallway. This creates that sense of opulence. While Art Deco is comfortable, it’s not casual, slouchy or overly relaxed in appearance.
