Farmhouse Interior Design

Farmhouse interior design is a style that celebrates character and charm. The modern take on this classic aesthetic is wonderfully neutral in colour, pairing comfortable furniture with treasured keepsakes that tell your story, for a lovely and layered look.

DESIGN IT WITH US HERE

What Is Farmhouse/Country Interior Design?

While farmhouse interior design draws inspiration from country homes of the 18th and 19th century, the modern incarnation is far less rustic and industrial.

The style still celebrates its origins in small ways, but it has become cleaner and more refined. The overall feel is always tactile but it’s softer than it used to be.

It’s a style that blends the new and the old perfectly, too.

Key Features of Farmhouse Interior Design

  • The colour palette is always neutral, embracing a medley of beige and brown tones with considered accents on top
  • Comfort is always front of mind; soft, sumptuous furniture you can sink into and enjoy
  • Texture and material is key; smooth timbers, quality stone, and organic linens shine in this style
  • Age and character is celebrated, so many of your existing pieces can be worked in alongside new additions

Applying Farmhouse Interior Design In Your Home

    Neutral Colour Palette

Because the style is all about evoking calm, the base palette is a neutral one. Beige and brown tones are the foundation, with white and soft grey layered on top. In terms of accent colours, you’re wise to look to nature. The farmhouse interior design style likes to blur the line between indoors and out, so bringing in soft greens and blues from your garden is a winning approach.

    Use of Natural Materials

While traditional farmhouse design looked to rough and rustic timbers, the more contemporary version is a smoother one. You still see all of those charming timber grains running through tabletops, but it’s soft to the touch. Organic linens are showcased in soft furnishings, with metal and stone making an appearance, too. The key to getting this look right is to embrace matte finishes; nothing is overly glossy or shiny.

    Low-Maintenance Usability

The farmhouse aesthetic is all about usability. Rooms are designed and oriented so that life feels easy. This isn’t a precious, high-maintenance design style, but rather an effortlessly sophisticated vibe you don’t have to worry over. Think slip cover furniture, easy-clean fabrics, and plenty of storage to hide away clutter. You want each room to feel like a gentle exhale.

    Large, Comfortable Furniture

The furniture in this style is comfort-driven, but that’s not to say that style is sacrificed. In fact, you get the best of both worlds with the pieces we bring into the room. We marry looks and comfort; large sofas and armchairs play alongside ample coffee tables and sideboards. We want the rooms to feel like a hug; a comfy cocoon you can curl up in. For this reason, furniture profiles are often soft; curves and arches embraced.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Think a neutral colour palette, large and comfortable furniture pieces, a touch of the organic and loads of your personal keepsakes displayed. This is a glorious old-meets-new aesthetic that feels calm and considered.

Materials are really important. You want to choose timbers that are soft to the touch but with visible grain present. Finishes are to be matte, not gloss. Soft, organic linens are key, with a few metals and stone thrown in too.

The best home decor for the farmhouse style feels a little aged, with a sense of story. Soft furnishings should feel cosy, and made from quality materials. Metal, stone and timber accessories are great too, as are indoor plants and flowers to connect the indoor to the out.

TLC Interiors works across all Melbourne suburbs, down to the Mornington Peninsula and also in the Geelong region. We go wherever the great clients are, having sprinkling our approachable designer style over homes for over 12 years.
