Modern Interior Design
Modern Interior Design has a clear sophistication to it, with rooms feeling light and bright, connected and uncluttered. A neutral base palette allows for bolder accent colours to shine, alongside interesting furniture profiles and decorative moments.
What Is Modern Interior Design?
When you walk into a home with modern interior design, expect to see open-plan spaces that support connectivity.
Walls are often white, flooring often light, and furniture on top tends to be neutral. The occasional bright pop in an armchair or artwork brings visual interest, but overall the spaces show restraint; a less-is-more approach.
There’s not a lot of embellishments or a sense of the ornate in this look. Traditional profiles are abandoned, with clean lines embraced. Interesting lighting is often showcased.
Key Features of Modern Interior Design
- The base colour palette is often a mix of crisp white, light oak tones, and black and grey accents
- Clean lines are present in rooms, with a focus on carefully curating pieces so that spaces don’t feel busy
- Ample natural lighting is often present thanks to large windows leading the eye outside
- Interesting furniture profiles are seen, but it’s never pushed too far; a gentle curve or angle is enough
- Open-plan layouts are king in modern interior design; there’s a great sense of flow and connection

Applying Modern Interior Design In Your Home
Colour Palette
The walls in a home with modern interior design are almost always going to be white, with light hard flooring. Window frames are often black, too. This crisp and cool foundation is what allows the occasional pop of colour to really shine. It could be a bright abstract artwork or bold rug. The balance between neutral and bold always favours neutral, though – colour is never pushed too far. Think an 80/20 split.
Open-Plan Layouts
Modern interior design does favour open-plan layouts, especially toward the back of the home where the kitchen, living and dining rooms are concerned. Of course, modern interior design is seen in apartments too, and those are equally open in their layouts. Because of this, it’s important we zone open spaces appropriately, through clever furniture orientation and the use of lighting and rugs.
Ample Natural Lighting
Natural light is always capitalised on as much as possible in a modern home. That’s why we mostly opt for window coverings like sheer curtains, so that even when privacy is needed during the day you still feel the ambient light beaming through. Dark, moody spaces can be achieved – and we do this for clients – but it’s more often a bedroom or study that gets this treatment, not a main living area.
Pattern and Texture
Outside of a colour pop in an armchair or artwork, the modern look is chic and neutral. For this reason, we need to elevate using pattern and texture (otherwise rooms feel flat). Geometric patterns work well in cushions, bedding and artworks. You can also embrace more fluid movement in larger items like rugs, though. Play with texture, too. Leather is great in a modern design, as is concrete, marble and metal.
