Best Cushions in Australia: The Top 10 Designer Brands We Use for Clients

Today I thought it was high time I unveiled the best cushions in Australia to you. These ones are the designer options we use for client homes all the time, so trust and believe they’ve been tried and tested in the real world.

Now don’t get me wrong; a budget cushion often does the trick. But sometimes you want the indulgence and refinement that comes with a plump, quality option. And to be fair, one of the biggest interior design mistakes I see people make in their living or bedroom is using sad, flat cushions. So sometimes you just need to invest the money to experience the designer deliciousness.

1. L&M Home

“Try L&M Home,” is a phrase you’ll often hear in the TLC office whenever we’re hunting down luxury soft furnishings for a client’s home. And while I’d absolutely describe them as luxury, there’s a simplicity to the brand that shines through. The pieces feel quietly confident; curated and grounded as opposed to loud and lairy.

That’s not to say there isn’t drama at play in the cushion range from this local brand, because there absolutely is. The tones in each cushion are rather moody and intoxicating though. Think burgundy, terracotta, mustard and navy, all interplaying for a result that feels rich and refined. 

Founded in 2000, the Aussie brand was previously known as Linen & Moore. And in case you were wondering, their range goes well beyond designer cushions. They also stock stunning home accessories, bed linen, table and bathware. It’s a brand you can evolve your interior with over time!

2. Walter G

A boutique textile house founded in 2012 by friends Lauren Emerson and Genevieve Hewson, Walter G is often our first go to for client cushions. The reason for this is simple: the patterns are everything!

Designed in-house and brought to life by a team of artisans in India, you can see the global influence in each print. They feel neither too vintage or too contemporary either, but a wonderful blend of the two. Good patterns that don’t feel over-the-top are so hard to find, but Walter G truly deliver the goods.

The cushion designs also give you the sense that they’ve lived in the home for years; picked up on travels in some wonderfully exotic overseas destination. We used Walter G cushions most recently in our Williamstown project, and love the sense of story they bring to a room. Highly recommend this brand, and they’re well worth the spend.

3. Weave Home

I don’t often thank the Instagram algorithm, but when Weave Home popped up in my feed recently it felt like Christmas had come early. I’m admittedly yet to road test these designer cushions, but I need some newbies for my own sofa at home and I’m absolutely getting them from these guys!

It’s rare I get stopped in my tracks these days. I’ve been working in design for close to a decade and thought I’d seen it all. But the patterns on Weave Home cushions are next level. I’m currently coveting their Verso Cushion, which like so many of their range features a hand-painted design – digitally printed on a natural fibre blend fabric.

The patterned cushions are so chic, but their block colours are just as good. It makes for an easy cushion curation. Get a few in block colours, pop an patterned accent in front, and voila; designer cushion magic from a brand that has contemporary living at the forefront of everything they do.

4. Eadie Lifestyle

I have a soft spot for Eadie Lifestyle because it was one of the first cushion brands I used for a client home when I moved to Melbourne back in 2015. The brand is steeped in timeless luxury, with a range that feels sophisticated but quite easy and effortless. And with a definite coastal vibe.

The cushion range is one of the best in Australia, with each hand-made piece coming with one of Eadie’s exclusive feather inserts. Honestly, I always say that the insert is where the look and feel of the cushion can all fall apart. But with Eadie you get a deliciously plump appearance every time; the perfect filling for a decent karate chop!

Trudie Cox founded the brand seven years ago, and is so confident in the quality of her cushions that she guarantee them for three years against any faults that may occur to it as a result of domestic, day to day use. Does it get any better?

5. Tim Neve

Interior stylist, author and educator; Tim Neve is quite the triple threat. And now he’s gone and released his latest cushion range – Muse – to further add to his list of many talents. And what a range it is!

Taking inspiration from ancient architecture, the current cushion collection features prints that feel rather strong and with a sense of presence. But then the soothing colour palette of cream, blush, soft terracotta and other clay tones gives each piece a nice sense of calm. These are cushions that’ll bring a wonderful balance to a bed or sofa and they certainly feel incredibly on-trend.

6. KAS

Bright, bold, dramatic, eclectic; these are all words I’d use to describe the stunning cushions from local brand KAS. If you’re into colour, these are the best cushions in Australia. They’re by no means shy, and certainly celebrate fun. 

The great thing about the range of KAS cushions is how just varied they are. They don’t fit into one distinct design style, which means you’re not stuck with a cushion that feels expected. I also really appreciate that while there is a tonne of colour and pattern at play in some of the pieces, there are quieter options for those of you looking for something with a calmer aesthetic. 

The texture is also a standout feature when it comes to KAS cushions too. Expect exquisite details like embroidery, tufting, tassels, fringing and so much more. There’s definitely loads of cosy options for winter and dazzling choices for the warmer months too. 

7. Sage and Clare

Another long-time fave Australian cushion brand of mine is Sage and Clare. The first time I did a photoshoot after I moved to Melbourne I did it in the Sage and Clare studio, which they would rent out to stylists as a photoshoot space. I got to see some of their bright and bold designs back then, and in the years that followed the cushions have only gotten bigger and better.

This is not the cushion brand for beige people, it must be said. There’s an unapologetic embracing of whimsy here, for decor lovers who admire colour and pattern. I also love the often-retro influence in their cushions as well as the unexpected materials and finishes they use (hello, shaggy fur!).

This Melbourne-based brand is the work of talented husband and wife team Phoebe and Chris, who’ve spent extensive time overseas working side-by-side with weavers, embroiderers, and screen printers to bring their designs to life.

8. RJ Living

Now I love me some RJ Living in general, but outside of their divine retail furniture they do stock some pretty phenomenal cushions that will give your bed or sofa a strong designer feel. You can shop for them in-store in Melbourne or online across Australia.

Citta Design is the main cushion brand they stock; a New Zealand biz with a refined sense of style. The cushions, as you can see, come in both block colours and interesting patterns, giving you both interest and intrigue along with a sense of understated luxury. The colour palette is wonderfully subdued and neutral too.

RJ Living also stocks McMullin & Co cushions (also rather luxe in feel) as well as Lightly, Bloomingville and more. Well worth a look if you need some quick and easy designer cushions delivered.

9. Living By Design

Now we all love some Marimekko, right? But how hard is it to find them in Australia? The answer is ‘not that hard anymore’ thanks to the design gurus at Living By Design. They have a whole host of classic Marimekko designed sprawled across delicious 50x50cm cushions as well as 40x60cm options too. And in an array of colours and neutrals.

And while you’d be mad not to snap up the Marimekko cushions, it should be noted that there’s a whole host of other designs available too. Think solid colours across velvet covers, floral and foliage designs, stripes and check patterns and so much more.

Living By Design also sells inserts. So if you happen to pick up a budget cushion cover somewhere else, at least you can buy one of their divine feather fillings to make your bargain buy feel plump and plush. We used some of their cushions in our recent West Melbourne project and highly recommend.

10. West Elm

Last but not least in our roundup of the best cushions in Australia I wanted to call out an accessible retail option for you. Because honestly, for some projects we exhaust all of our trade options and can’t find what we need. And so we end up shopping in stores like West Elm.

And West Elm would definitely be the one I call out because it is unapologetically mid-Century modern in its style influence. So for projects that have a little MCM in them, the cushions are perfect. But truthfully, they’re great for contemporary luxe homes as well. The patterns are often not literal retro, so they’re well worth considering.

As a cheeky eleventh option I would also put OZ Design in the list. They are doing amazing things with homeware of late and some of their cushions are insanely on-trend.
