Did you know that some basic sofa styling ideas can completely transform your living room? I’m going to prove it to you in today’s post. Check out the video above to see this concept in action, or scroll on as I show you in pictures how small tweaks in your living room can make a huuuge difference.
I hate the idea that you have to spend a fortune to get your living room looking lush. By all means invest in the large pieces like a sofa, coffee table and window treatments. But then all of the smaller decor accessories should be super affordable in my books.
The reason for this philosophy is that I’m obsessed with seasonal updates at home. I love to change up the smaller pieces to make the room feel fresh. It’s one of the telltale signs you’re a decorating junkie (the full list of signs is here). And I love every minute of it.

Why Base Pieces Should Stay the Same
Below I want to show you some of my sofa styling ideas using products from my mates at Lorraine Lea. You’ll notice that all of the base pieces in the room remain the same: sofa, coffee tables, flooring and window treatments remain throughout. That’s how I like to do it in my own home, and that’s how I did it for this photoshoot.
You’ll be amazed at how different a room can look just by changing up the colours and textures you bring in. Introducing cushions, throws, rugs and tabletop accessories in different hues and finishes makes such a difference. And seriously, who has the cash to buy a new sofa or coffee table every few months (not me, and not you!).
I’ve been working with Lorraine Lea for ages now, styling their products, and that’s what I love about them: their decor is so affordable. It means homewares nuts like us can refresh constantly without having to hide our credit card receipts from our partner. We’ve all been there!
Look One: Pink and Grey All the Way!
The feminine vibes here are making my heart happy. What a soft and inviting space to pop your feet up and devour an entire bag of marshmallows. And yes, I included pink and white marshmallows in this shoot because they matched the decor. I also maybe definitely consumed all of them when we wrapped.
But seriously, blush tones are super soothing. When you pair them with white and soft grey in a living room like this one, it just makes the space feel so serene. This it not a new colour combo by any means, but it’s becoming a staple in so many homes and I’m a huge fan.
On a sidenote, can I just call out how many cushions are on the sofa? Tonnes right? And yet it doesn’t (to me anyway) feel overstuffed. When it comes to sofa styling ideas I’m always of the thinking that more is more on the cushion front. I hope you feel the same. Here are some tips on styling your sofa with cushions if you need.
Your Soft and Serene Shopping List
- Featured above and directly below are the Harper Cushions & Throws in Blush
- You’ll also notice the divine Velvet Cushion Covers at play here too
- I also rolled out the Sabo Floor Rug which has such a striking geometric pattern
- And I popped an Addison Vase and Astrid Planter on the coffee tables
Next Up: All Stops to Romance on the Couch
My sofa styling ideas are heading in a moody direction now, because… why not!? Nothing like a bit of snuggle time on the sofa right? So what if the snuggle is just me with a red wine and a block of chocolate. I still call that a pretty phenomenal night in.
As mentioned already, base pieces are the same. All I’ve done is rolled out a new rug, changed the colour of the cushions on the sofa, and popped some additional accessories on the coffee tables. And voila – it’s gone from soft and feminine to quite sumptuous and cosy. The rug is doing a lot of the work in making it feel cosy actually; so plush!
Working with deep purple tones like prune doesn’t have to be tricky either. In this post I show you just how easy it can be. There are bonus tips on working with mustard and deep teal too if you’re into those lush hues. Which you totally should be.
There’s one more look to explore, but before we do that, let me give you the shopping list.
Your Romantic Vibes Shopping List
- The Harper Cushions in Prune set the mood here
- You’ll also spy Velvet Cushion Covers doing their thing as well
- Those Ainsley Glass Vases are stunners as well
- Sadly the rug is no longer available. So devvo
Last but not Least: Hello Hamptons
I gotta admit, most of the inquiries I get from design clients are about helping them do a Hamptons scheme. I’m honestly not surprised – it’s such an awesome look for a home. I’ve done a tonne of posts on how to achieve a Hamptons look, so click here if you want to check ’em all out.
The sofa styling ideas for this look follow much the same concepts as the others: just change up little decor moments and discover what a difference it make make to the look of your living room. Here the scene feels crisp and refreshing. All of those invigorating blue tones playing with the striking white and grey is heaven on a stick if you ask me.
You’ll also notice above that I’ve put more than one rug down in this space. Give this a try at your place if you love a rug but it feels too small to include on its own. It’s a great way to bring some interest to your floor – and you can space them apart as far or close as you like.
We’re almost at the end of my budget sofa styling ideas. But get out your credit card because you’ll want to snap up these affordable decor buys!
Your Hamptons Sofa Shopping List
- The Harper Cushion Covers in Indigo are so striking
- Paired with the Velvet Cushion Covers, they make a great team
- Those Margaret Floor Rugs are a coastal dream too
- I’m also super fond of the spotty Rachel Vase on the coffee table

Where is the sofa from please?
Hi Kerrie-Lee. I’m not sure about that particular sofa, but you should be able to find something similar from many suppliers.
