  1. Hello
I have a dilemma. I have a sofa measuring 70.8inch and I want to hang a rectangular picture that has a circle inside. I have several options to choose the size of the circle inside. either 11.8 cm or 17.7 or 23.6 inch.
I want to frame the circle in a square frame and dont know what size is the most correct to choose the inside circle and the size i framed him

can you help me? thank you

  2. Hi Chris, thank you for this article and the tip for Frame Shop. I have a number of papyrus paintings just over the A4 size. I have struggled to get them framed in ‘a modern way’. Most papyrus ideas on the internet seem to frame them in old fashioned, gold embossed bleh. My decor is definitely California Cool (as per your previous articles!). Any suggestions?

    1. Don’t stress about the frames needing to be old fashioned, or gold or whatnot. Just choose something that compliments the paintings. Raw timber looks good in a California Cool style and should would well with papyrus paintings. You could also go to a local framing place, there’s a great one in Melbourne we use called Frames Readymade. The people working there are really helpful.

  3. Hi Chris, Iโ€™m looking at purchasing Earthly Designs i & ii by Kerri Schipp to hang above a buffet. The buffet measures 1760cm. Would you agree 2 @ 590w x 780h would be the most suitable size?
    Many thanks, Cathy

    1. Hey Cathy. Absolutely! Those dimensions would work really well. It leaves you with about 60cm to play with, which means 10cm each side of the art and then 10cm gap between them. Works well ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Hi Chris, I want to buy art.. but we are renting. What advice do you have for renters who want to buy art but not sure what to go for?

    1. Hey Prash, renting is hard. Sticky hooks work to an extent (I find the sticky velcro better) but you run the risk of the art falling. You could get permission to put up hooks if you agree to patch and repair.

Otherwise, stick with very light pieces and use the sticky velcro. Canvas works best for this.

  5. Great article!! But, I’d like to know how to calculate the right size of an art for a wall, so that it doesn’t look too small or too big. Is there a formula?

  6. Thanks so much for the fantastic tips. One of my pet hates is art hung too high.
I recently had a fairly cheap, large canvas print framed and it looks amazing- and expensive.

  7. Hi Chris, is it ok to hang artwork on the wall on either side of the bed. I have a thing about artwork hanging above my head.

    1. Sure, I’ve done this before. Above the bedside tables is a good option, roughly the same width or a little smaller. Above your bed might look a little bare, but that’s something you’ll have to live with if you don’t want anything hanging above you. Wallpaper might be another good option to spice up the wall.

      1. Hi Chris
Hanging artwork has always been a issue in my home with my husband always putting it up to high. I have a hallway wall which expands 4.5 metres what size artwork should I place on this wall

        1. Unless you’ve got the budget for a big custom piece, your best bet might be two or three very large pieces from somewhere like Urban Road. On a 4.5m wall you could get away with three pieces 1m wide.

  8. Hi Chris! Do you happen to know the artist of the Post No Bills and Middle Finger piece from your “Interior Design Trends for 2017: Urban Warrior” article? Absolutely loved those pieces.

  9. Hi Chris, i am mad on everything ‘Slim Aarons’, but i’m worried about his artwork not suiting our house. If i’m really in love with his art, which i am, does it matter??

    1. Hey Miriam, it depends on your home. You can have art contrasting with the style of the home to an extent, just try to match some colours between the art and the homes.
