  1. Generally, the recommendation is to line up the top of your lamp shades with the top of the headboard. I do not feel I need anything above. Don’t you feel hanging art above a headboard when you have a 2.5m ceiling is an overkill and a bit disproportionate when the bedside lamps are just low? Your examples look beautiful but you use pendant lights not table lights. I am really curious because I keep having this conversation with property stagers and we reached no conclusion. From their angle, it’s all about the photos…

    1. It can depend a bit on the height of the headboard, but I do like art above. However if you have a nice feature colour or wallpaper you may not need it.

  2. I have a King size bed and purchased 3 pictures frames 23.5 x 29.5. Questioning whether to hang 3 frames tight or two over the bed frame plenty of height in room. What’s your suggestion?

    1. Hi Nancy, they sound a bit too small actually. Can you get larger square or landscape orientation ones?

  3. Hello Chris –
    Wonderful article!
I’m working on a bedroom with a queen size bed with no headboard. The ceiling height is 9’ . What would your recommendations be in hanging artwork?

    1. Hi Diana,

You want to be able to sit up in bed leaning against the wall/pillows without any chance of hitting the artwork. Almost pretend you still do have a headboard.

  4. Hi Chris
I only found this article today July 2024 and very helpful
I was having a go myself having spent so
Much time – with wrong template – & it was driving me bonkers!! , until I saw your article that I realised that I should be using two squares for artwork above the Queen bed. That does look sensational! Can you recommend a “frame size” that works best for to squared pieces of artwork above the bed? Thankyou in advance from an appreciative Sarah

    1. Hi Sarah,

Don’t do an oversized frame as a general rule. About an inch/2.5cm is fine if having a mat board, a bit bigger if not.

  5. This is very helpful. I would love your opinion if possible as I’m struggling to decide on wall art above my bed. I have a Thuma Walnut Queen bed with the wooden headboard (it is not a very large headboard and bed is relatively low). Our ceilings are a bit higher than normal. I feel good about the idea of two squares and trying to figure out the following 1) What size squares to get 2) whether to match the frames with our walnut headboard or with our round brushed brass night stands (with antique mirror tops). Appreciate any insights!!

  6. I have an iron king size bed. I would like to put a large flamingo print over the bed. The problem is it would be 6” below the top of the bed but it is see through the irons. Is this ok or does need to be above headboard like solid headboard
    Thx for your help
