At the weekend, I went to the Newtown festival and the festival won. Good Lord was it packed to the brim with people (and I never cope well in large crowds unless it’s at Grand Designs Live or a similar exhibition!). Needless to say, it got me thinking about interiors (any excuse!) and once I emerged from the crowd I remembered this post I wrote on the ‘Hipster Home’.
You might actually be surprised to discover that you live in one of these homes. This look is made up of a few different design inclusions – some of which you might be rocking right now. Let’s take a look at what makes up a hipster home and figure out how you can make it work if you do in fact enjoy the look of it!
A hipster home is a mismatch of several different trends and styles. The beauty of this look is that it mixes different design ideas with little thought or planning. Because the look is so influenced by a limited budget and best utilised by students and inner-city dwellers, it’s a scheme that literally lives by the rule of ‘anything goes’.
Take a look at the photo gallery to see just what I mean:
A Guide to a Hipster Home:
It’s Vintage.
A hipster home is all about bringing in affordable retro furniture, so expect to see things from years gone by – especially dark wooden sideboards, suede chairs and old lampshades. A floral cushion you’d see at Nan’s place is very at home here.
It’s Eclectic.
In fact, it takes a lot from the Boho trend in that it layers decor, utilises travel finds, decorates with embellishments and feels relaxed. The key difference is that the hipster trend is not at all coastal or ethnic.
It’s Roadside Chic.
There’s a definite shabbiness to the hipster trend, so roadside finds are a must-have for this look. Old milk crates, graffiti walls, second-hand crockery and anything mismatched is very fitting.
It’s Whimsical.
The decorative items in a hipster home are cheap and crafty with a slight nod to the juvenile. Fairy lights, washi tape, affordable art and tea light candles bring this look to life and allow it to be updated with ease.
It’s a little Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Old records, some musical instruments, a little mess; these are the elements that finish off the look. A framed Bowie or Blondie poster would be idea in a hipster home.
What’s the verdict, Creatives? Are you into the hipster home? Do you like some parts of this aesthetic and not others? Have you realised that you do in fact live in a hipster home? I’d love to get a dialogue going in the comments below so lemme know your thoughts on this 🙂
Apparently I live in a hipster home… Love this post!
