  1. This blog has helped me on how and at which height the pendant lights should be hanged. Thank you for posting such an amazing blog. Keep Sharing More.

  2. Help! We would like to hang a group of pendants over our stairwell void. The ceiling is around 2.85 high from the upper floor, with 2.7m high on the level below – so total ceiling height in the void is around 5.5m! If we hang them low enough to be visible on the lower floor, then we are looking down into them when we’re on the upper level – which seems a bit strange. Should we hang them just to suit the upper level – ie a certain height above the floor on upper level? This will make them very high above the lower floor. Its intended that these pendants will give a soft general light but are mainly decorative. Hoping you can advise!!

    1. The right pendant can look fine to look down and through. Could be an intentional statement. But your best bet is to hang it high, maybe around balustrade height. Depends on the fitting itself and the space.

  3. Hi Chris
I have 2950 ceilings. How high should I hand my island bench pendants ?
    Island bench is 900
    Loved your blog
    Thanks in advance

    1. Hey Georgie! The ceiling height won’t effect what height you hang the pendants, because you always go from your benchtop up in terms of measurements. So you’d still follow the same rule: about a metre from the benchtop. That’s if you need the lights functionally. If they’re purely decorative you could raise them a little higher (but no more than 120cm). Hope that helps.

  4. Hi Chris. I’m loving your regular blogs thank you. Do these rules apply to old style glass crystal chandeliers as well over for over a kitchen bench, dining table etc ? I would like to add some nostalgia as well as some bling.

  5. Hi Chris what a great article. Very informative.
Just hanging 3 Marcel lights purchased from Beacon lighting for hanging above my dining room table. One large 300m and two smaller at 250mm. Have removed old light fitting and about to install new large one in centre. Question… should all 3 lights need to be in a line on ceiling or varied from centre of room? And what spacing apart and what heights to hang smaller two. Same or different.

    1. Hey Sue, in a line is a safe bet. Depending on the pendants you might get away with a different layout, but it’s hard for me to say. And just use the size of your table as a guide for how to space out your pendants. Larger in the middle, the two smaller ones an equal distance apart either side.

  6. Hi there, I have recently purchased some gorgeous clear glass and teak pendants from beacon.. we have 3 to span across a 3.3m island bench.. the problem I’m having is the super high ceilings we have.. our ceilings are already high throughout house but we have opted to have cathedral ceilings in the extension (over kitchen). The bench will run across this so will go from high to low.. in this instance, how high would you place pendants above bench? Using the pendants at their longest setting would place them about 1.2m above bench height (I think, could be more)..

    1. Hi Sarah, 1.2m is probably too high unless they cast quite a focussed light. Otherwise, they won’t be functional for working in the kitchen. You might need to get them rewired to hang lower.

  7. Timely post Chris! I just bought pendants for my kitchen bench to replace existing pendants that have provided years of very crappy task lighting! I would like to install them in the same spot to avoid patching up on the ceiling but the new ones are bigger. What’s the guide for spacing between the pendants?
    Thanks, Vilma

    1. Hey Vilma. It’s harder to say how far they should be spaced apart without knowing the width of the bench/island they’re going over, and the width of the pendants. Are you part of my Facebook group? You can come post photos here and the group and I can help you out. Much easier when we can see what the kitchen looks like 🙂 https://www.facebook.com/groups/tlcdecoratingjunkies/

  8. Love the pendant you have here in the bedroom, could you please tell me where you got this form.
    Thank You Chris
