  1. I have a small dining room. A console that’s is yellow/,gold, white n black pattern of birds my table is black top white base. I’m so undecided do black chairs work or white or gray can you help

  2. Hi, Chris,
I was planning to get 4 chairs in one style and two different, with arms, eventually upholstered, for the corners. So, can de four chairs be sisters with the table and with the corner chairs? Or it is too much?

  3. Hi Chris, love your article, fully agree with mismatch dining table & chairs.
My kitchen – dining room is tone on tone shades of Farrow & Ball greys cabinets light & Island dark, white quartz worktop & beige tiled floor.
I am looking at a solid oak table with clean edges and sleek line legs & spindle back grey wooden chairs, what would you think?

  4. Hi,

What chairs would you recommend with a dining room table that is about 1/12 inches of light teak wood and the legs are stainless steel; that cross on the ends and have a beam across?

    1. Hi Adena, I’ve been recommending people google an image of their table and see if it is shown with chairs that you like. Then find something that looks similar.

  5. Thanks for the article, Chris! Would you be so kind to suggest what chairs would go well with an Ercol corso dining table in whitened ash finish? I have grey tiles on floor. I really like the wishbone chair for its design and textured seat but can’t decide which wood colour or finish to choose for the chair? Narrowed down to either a classic clear oak/beech/ash finish with natural weave seat or black with natural weave. Any guidance would be great! Many thanks in advance.

  6. Hi Chris,

I’m so pleased I found this article, such beautiful examples thank you. I have a slightly different conundrum where I have inherited some beautiful Niels Koefoed Eva dining chairs in Rosewood (I think) and I am struggling to choose a dining table that is modern but works with the warmth of the wood. I have considered marble top with black legs, oak, glass, etc and am just going round in circles! What would you recommend?

    Thanks so much.

  7. Hi Chris,
This article was really helpful! and loving your entire blog. I can’t stop reading!

I’m wondering if the shape of the chair in relation to the table is also worth considering? Eg. rounded or soft chairs to offset a hard lined rectangular or square table etc.

I recently purchased a beautiful light/shell-coloured terrazzo dining table, with light acacia wood legs (though after reading this article, I realised the legs were too close in colour to my floorboards, which are also light). I was thinking a light wooden (eg. oak) chair to match the table legs would be a nice soft layer around the table? Such as the wishbone style chairs. I’m wanting to keep it somewhat casual yet sophisticated. Fabric might be too formal and maybe heavy for the style and type of table…

A black framed chair also looks nice but am hoping to keep black at a minimum for my room (I have black accents here and there already).

  8. Hello Chris,

Thanks for the article. I was hoping you would say what goes well with wood/steel legs. I have a rectangle walnut table top with matte black steel legs. I could really use some help on what type of chairs that will go well. Color and material.

    Thanks

    1. Hi R, black metal legs on the chair, with a black leather seat would look nice. Thin profile legs.

  9. Hi chris! Love the article, very helpful. I have purchased dining chairs with oak legs and light grey fabric. What kind of table do you reccomend? Would a complete oak table be too matchy?

    1. Thanks Chelsea, depends on the type of chair in my opinion. If the whole seat and back is fabric, oak legs will be fine. If the chair frame is on show and its just the back and seat that are grey I’d be careful not to overwhelm the space with too much raw oak. Could try a different stain or colour.

  10. Thank you so much for this article. I will need a little more help choosing what dining chairs I should buy but I know now what I should not buy
