  1. The one thing that stands out for me is that desert garden. How did anyone think that is a good design for Melbourne. Hopefully they sorted out any drainage issues as the cactus etc will die once it goes through its first winter in that garden pit if the drainage is not great. Also imagine the garden as a sun trap – god it would just be dreadful on a forty degree day as well as blind you as you step into it. Even the deep verandah would not save you. At least they should of had fans or a misting system in place.
I can see parents sending there kids out to play there. Yeah sure – between sun burn and grazed knees. Oh and don’t forget the wonderful game of throwing stones – Little Johnny will be delighted.
If you thought you had one Rhohypnol – someone must of slipped me the whole bottle!!!
PS Sorry can’t stop thinking about – such a bad dream.
PPS it isn’t even a dream you wish to have – bland, boring and just fugly! Badly designed.
PPPS would be terrified if I presented this in design studio at Uni. The prof would have ripped into it and da da fail!

  2. Hi Chris, I was heartened to read your review. I agree with these comments that the judges were inconsistent when saying House 1 didn’t have enough grass when House 5 had nothing but gravel, rocks and sparsely populated spiked plants, ouch. Come auction day, House 5 will find out that their niche taste will only appeal to a limited part of the market. I’m glad you mentioned the tiles on the verandah and steps of House 2, they didn’t match anything else. Yes, House 1 has faults but did not deserve the trashing by the judges. I dumbfounded that Houses 2&5 won. First place should’ve been House 3 or 4. Those couples deserve to do well because of their thoughtful approach and broad appeal. Also would love to Harry and Tash do well too.

  3. I totally agree with your prognosis of each garden. I would get rid of Harry & Tash’s brick archway as I think it looks dated; the brick facade on Sarah & George’s house doesn’t go with the style at all; and as for Jimmy & Tam … there is nothing I would keep at all, it is so unappealing. As for the brick front fences, whose idea were these? Pretty little picket fences would be so much nicer (in my humble opinion).

    1. Unfortunately, it’s on a busy road, the noise would be a sales killer, hence the brick fence. I’d be growing something over it to hide it and further block the noise.

  4. I can’t believe these gardens. Where were the designers. It’s all so patchy. I’m a gardener and so disappointed at the judges choices once again..

  5. Your write ups are amazing! Not only for accuracy but for delivery…4th judge on the next block? Yes you should be! I thought they were all a little lack-lustre (ofcourse I don’t know how difficult it is never having been on the show but still….) Personally it’s probably picky but just one little thing I really disliked was the pavement at Luke and Jasmines the sort of zig zag random-ness didn’t work for me. 100% agree with the steps at Sarah and George’s along with your other comments such as Jimmy & Tam’s win which yes was nucking futs and that’s coming from someone that use to work in realestate.

  6. Oh how I laughed at your reviews! Especially the description of the rubbish dumping area and where ne’er do wells may congregate – very accurate! Keep them coming!

  7. This must be already decided. There is no way this couple should have won with this garden, can you imagine children and the grandparents enjoying this desert. I actually don’t like this house at all. Their living/dining/kitchen is not meant for entertaining , there is nowhere you can sit as a family m there is so much to to like.. I think Harry and Tash are doing a great job I hope they win. It was distressing watching it last night

  8. As a fellow interior designer (now retired for a tree change), you are correct. That winning garden is FUGLY!!
… But then, the whole show is a travesty on so many levels.

  9. So happy to hear that you also thought Daniel and Jade’s were the winners here. We’re about to do landscaping at our newly built home and with last night’s judging I honestly thought I might be missing something if the “desert wasteland” is what people would look for!

  10. I’m with you Chris jimmy & Tams front yard a big fat disaster can’t wait to see what they do out the back it’s obviously not been built for a family with young kids in mind all those spikey things ouch but loved Daniel & Jades
