Designer Outdoor Furniture from Outside Envy
It’s fair to say that in a week of blogging I get stacks and stacks of press releases hit my inbox, from brands wanting to spread the word about their products. Sadly, though, not all of them make it onto the blog or take my fancy in a way that makes me think… TLC readers need to know about this.
And then there are other scenarios in which I open up a press release, or go onto a website, and experience heart racing joy and rapture that deems a blog post necessarily ASAP if not sooner. This is exactly what happened when I feasted my eyes on this sublime designer outdoor furniture from Melbourne brand Outside Envy.
Once you see what they can do with seating for your exterior space I’m pretty sure you too will find them hard to resist. So let me give you a quick snapshot of this awesome local biz.
Founded by Melissa Smythe, Outside Envy in a designer outdoor furniture brand that was born out of necessity. Going into a tonne of client homes over the years in her work as an interior designer, Melissa kept discovering the same common issue; outdoor areas never got the stylish treatment indoor zones got.
“I continued to see one recurring problem – the furniture was pretty much the same wherever I went,” she explains. “The outdoor furniture in these spaces was bland, colourless and design seemed to stop when it came to the back door”.
And so the ideas started flowing, as Melissa became set on creating outdoor furniture that was beautiful, bespoke, comfortable and durable.
Melissa explains that each of the fabrics she sources for her designs is chosen specifically with a few key essentials in mind; they needed to retain colour-fastness, durability, water, mould and stain repellency. The comfort of the sofa (something lacking in many outdoor suites) was also of huge importance to Melissa.
“My clients were asking me for a product I couldn’t find – an outdoor range that made others envious. So I decided to create my own.”
“We needed to consider height – for ease of getting up and sitting down – and wanted to create something relaxing enough to sink back into, to put your feet up. Somewhere you can sit to read the paper and have your morning coffee, and durable enough to have friends over on the weekend, without worrying if the red wine is spilt, or if little ones run their fingers over the seats”.
The great thing about this outdoor furniture brand is that they work with clients one-on-one. Starting with an armchair design, it can be tweaked into a two or three-seater, chaise lounge, ottoman – you name it.
Made in Melbourne, it’s such a wonderfully bespoke offering and the fabrics are limited-run, so you really are getting something quite special.

Have you seen designer outdoor furniture like this before? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it in the comments below.
Wow! It is really nice! Thanks Chris for sharing this post 🙂
I love these designs but as there is always that risk that something outdoors will be affected by the weather even if not directly placed in the sun or rain. I wonder how it would go?
Oooooh … love! One of those moments you think to yourself: WHY didn’t someone do this sooner?!
Wow they look nothing like outdoor furniture! So stylish!!
Thanks for your beautiful blog.
I feel really excited about the range coming out for DEN Fair, I hope you can call past and see it.
I’m hopeful the public will start to support sustainable furniture that stands the test of time by being locally made and designed.
Oh Mel, I’ll be there at Denfair with bells on, so I’ll come and say hi for sure. I am DYING to see this furniture in person. I swear it looks too good to go outside – but that’s what makes it so special for me. I am sure the public will be all over it!
Hooray something new & unique 2016 or at least to me. Love your article. Thankyou.
No worries Debra. I honestly have never seen outdoor furniture like this before. I literally gasped out loud when I saw it. Looks too good to be outdoor, right? 🙂 Glad you loved the post.
