  1. Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for all your feedback.

I have several companies coming by to discuss adding sheer curtains to my living room, and each one is giving me different ideas, so I’m starting to feel confused. I live in an apartment with a living room that faces the street, and it has three large floor-to-ceiling windows and a smaller window on the right.

My question is: Would you recommend using two straight tracks—one straight and the other perpendicular to cover all the windows—or would it be better to use a curved track for the sheer curtains?

Thank you so much for your time.

    1. Both options work to be honest but room size is a consideration. With the curved option you lose a small amount of space in the curved corner for the track and curtain to move around freely. So if space is at a premium, definitely two tracks. Otherwise think about how you need to access any windows or doors to balconies. Two tracks, or splitting the curtain on a curved track into two independent pieces, gives you more options.

  2. Hello!
Help, I’m drowning in fabric samples! To help me narrow it down my blinds which will sit behind the sheers are cool white with texture, should I stear clear of linen and lean more towards the voile options? And to help narrow it even further my wall colour is low sheen neutral white (Snowy Mountains half) and trims are semi gloss Lexicon Qtr, would you lean towards a cool or neutral sheer colour?
    Thanks so much!

  3. Hi Chris, thank you for your very helpful ideas about curtain choices etc. I have one question I would value your opinion on. I want to hang sheer drapes across the entire wall of windows & doors of a living space. I have chosen a polyester linen look sheer and found an off white option which is just off white. Perfect option as all the trims are an off white not stark white. The walls are a very, very pale shade of what I would call a soft green/ grey but not grey. Very light but like an off white with this hint of colour. Can’t tell you the colour as I have spent some time with colour swatches trying to find a paint colour. Unfortunately there wasn’t sufficient fabric in off white but plenty in white. I believe the off white was perfect but my question to you is whether you would use white in this situation??? Thank you…. Gloria Wilkinson

    1. That is such a tough one Gloria. And honestly it’s hard to advise you. When I select sheer curtains for clients I take all of the samples to their home and hold them up against the wall. You’d be surprised how the colour of the curtain can change when it’s sat against the paint on the wall (and the trims). So in this instance, that would be my advice. You need a large sample and you need to look at it in your home against the wall. It’s the only way to truly know if it’s going to work.

  4. There’s certainly a lot in it, thank you! One tip I have to compare sample pieces from a distance, to gauge what the light filtering level is, is to hang up an old curtain and pin several samples down the length of it and then stand back.

  5. Great article Chris! What about hems for s-fold sheers. 10cm hems or weighted overlocked? Which is more modern and fresh. How does one choose which one? Thanks.

  6. Hi Chris,
Great article that answered almost all my questions – thank you! Just wondering what your thoughts are on sheers that are installed into a corner – as in there is a window on both walls covered by sheers. Would you stack them into the corner or to the outside edge of each window??
    Thanks so much!

  7. The article is extremely helpful. My 16×20’ room is painted a lovely light grey my wood flooring is a combination of greys, browns and beige. I have 3 windows in the room. Two on one wall the third on a separate wall. I currently have heavy drapes on the windows. The rods are hung halfway between the ceiling and the window top. They are brown. Ok my question. I am considering sheers. Any suggestions on hanging them with my existing rod or should replace it with something else. I think I’d like to have the sheers with a little more statement than a solid color but o don’t want a print such as floral. This is a modest lake home. Thank you for your time and any help

  8. Hi Chris,

Your home tips are always so helpful. So I have a question for you.
Do you think that a wave-fold or gathered heading sheer curtain is more Hamptons style?

  9. Checkout veri shades. They look like sheers but can be made opaque by turning the wand, and you can walk through them! Weve just had them installed and we love them!

  10. Love your tips Chris ! Many thanks for your articles!
I’m wondering whether as a rule of thumb, should all windows be dressed the same in a room ?
