  1. Obviously you are lucky enough not to be allergic to dustmites. I am very allergic to it and proceeded to eliminate over the years everything that increased their occurrence, with obvious beneficial side effects. The worst item by far is carpeted floors and rugs, even when almost new and thoroughly regularly vacuumed. Getting rid of those with the same cleaning routine allowed me to significantly reduce the need for allergy meds. Second is cushions.
I am reintroducing cushions in my new bigger living room that feels empty. But rugs can never come back.
Frankly I’d like to have designers come with creative room designs that take into account this allergy issue, especially as it gets more and more common for young urban kids. That would make an interesting challenge

  2. This blog was quite informative and is a great assist for me as I decorate going forward. I look forward to more posts like this, which will help me to improve with my home decor.
    Thank you!

  3. THANK YOU for mentioning the orientation of the sofa to the TV. I find it incredibly pretentious when we get told that a TV is not supposed to be a focal point. Nothing grinds my gears more than people being suckered into arranging their sofa’s to only suit conversation/entertaining when they only have one lounge in the house, as most of us do.

  4. What to do if you have made a mistake Chris? I have a large modular lounge in chocolate brown leather that I have spent too much to part with. I’ve tried throws & cushions in white to lift it up, any other suggestions?

    1. Hi Chrissie, what other colours are in the room? White would probably be too contrasting against it. Try greys, and even some other lighter and darker brown tones. Mustard is a classic colour to pair with brown, if it works in your room. Nothing you can do to hide it obviously, but you want to make the colour choice seem intentional and work with everything else.

  5. Guilty on all counts. Building a new house and already dreading doing the living and dining areas…always get it terribly wrong.
So far have failed the bedroom and living rooms.

  6. Sorry Chris i cant do rugs! I have tiled floors too. I just don’t want extra stuff to clean up, I have kids, warm weather and occasional doggies inside…sorry just can’t do it….

  7. Only 1 and easily rectifiable – personalisation of the coffee table 🙂

Thanks Chris , it’s been quite reaffirming !

  8. Hi Chris
Great ideas for home improvement as always.
Would you please tell me where the aubergine coloured chair in your gorgeous CBD makeover came from.
    Thanks. Margot

      1. Hi
Really enjoyed this article funny and informative. I bought a white rug to ground my space. I think I made a mistake. Now I don’t want to put it down.

        1. Oh Steph, i did the same. I bought a giant whit with thin grey triangles on it shag pile. Gorgeous to look at but so unpractical, even i didn’t want to walk on it. So it is now in a guest room that doesn’t get to much foot traffic I now have a bare tiled floor waiting for my new lounge to arrive and i will select one appropriate to match accordingly. My hubby shakes his head….
