  1. Hi Chris, yet another entertaining, fun but also informative and helpful blog! I was happy to be able to say at the end that my living room does not commit any of these crimes, although nor should it I suppose as I work in design too lol. I can always see about 10 things I would change or improve in any room of my house though because that’s just how we are wired I guess!
I laughed at the picture of the puffy sectional/recliner sofa at the start of the blog. I have always thought them to look so hideous. I also fall asleep very easily so would never make it through a movie laid back like that hehe. They are comfortable – if only someone could invent an invisible one haha, but then the room would look kind of weird and empty. Anyway, enough of my ramblings! xxx

  2. Great article thanks! I intend to follow all the rules except the rug — maybe your biggest no-no sorry!! Two kids under 4. I’d much rather our timber-look hybrid flooring wear all the food and drink they drop. A rug will have to wait until they are older.
In our second, carpeted, enclosed lounge room, I love the idea of a recliner suite for maximum comfort. And the room will be nice and big which will hopefully allow for a bulkier couch. Any ideas how I can achieve this (or viable alternatives to put my feet up) within a modern-style home, without it looking like I got my grandmother’s lounge suite secondhand?

    1. Hey Nick, I have a love-hate relationship with recliners. They can be comfy and a great place to relax and watch a movie, it’s just so hard to find ones that match the aesthetics of a standard sofa or armchair. Ottomans can be a good alternative, or chaise lounges. If you really want a recliner, I would usually recommend Plush when they’re having a sale.

    1. Hi Praveena, absolutely if that’s how you want to do your room. I wouldn’t normally recommend it, but it is your home.

  3. I agree with you on the cushions (pillows) on the couch with one caveat. Too often there are so many on the couch you simply can’t sit less you either remove a few or perch on the edge

  4. In the middle of decorating my new home. Have looked for months for the right sofa, chair You are the first and most reasonable I have come across. 2 sofas across from each other are for formal living rooms…my living room has a TV in it.

  5. Hi, what do I do about storage for comfy blankets in the living room. Right now we have them in a footrest/bench that opens up and serves as storage

    1. Hi Esther, that storage option sounds fine if it’s working for you. Otherwise, just keep the blankets in the linen closet and take them out as needed.

  6. Hi Chris
THanks for the very useful article. I have a two seater couch (dark grey) and 2 single armchairs (dark green velvet) in my lounge. I would like to add further chairs to seat 6 – is it better to add another identical couch to the one I have or to add 2 more formal cane chairs? If a couch is best, should the two couches face each other or be at right angles?
    thanks so much
    Tabitha

    1. Hi Tabitha, depends on the layout and function of your room. Two sofas facing each other is more formal, in an L shape more relaxed and better for lounging and watching TV.

  7. Such a resourceful post and so well written, Chris! I am going to look up for your other posts as I decorate my new home.
