It’ll probably come as no surprise that my answer to the question “should I hire an interior stylist or designer?” is a very firm yes.
That’s right… as a working interior designer, this blog post is going to be incredibly bias. I’m giving you fair warning. I think interior stylists and designers rock. I think the work they do is incredible. And I think they’re a must for anyone that wants to give a room in their home a makeover.
And in this post, I’m going to tell you why you should hire one.
Also, be aware that some of us call ourselves interior stylists, some of us call ourselves decorators, some of us are designers. There are differences between them all… but that’s another entire blog post that I think we best leave until later.
Here are just some of the reasons you should hire and interior stylist or designer.
1. We Consolidate your Ideas
We’ve all gotten stuck in a Pinterest hole; hours spent pinning imagery of our dream room. If you find that you’re overwhelmed with options and can’t figure out what works together and what doesn’t, an interior stylist/designer is expert in this area.
I can take all of your ideas and sift through them; sorting out what will look best in your space, work best for you and your family day-to-day, and also point out the pieces you’ve selected that just aren’t going to work in the room you want to redesign.
It might take you months to sort this out. A stylist/designer can work it out in a matter of minutes.
2. We Help you Visualise the Space
I’ve posted on here before just how important I believe mood boarding is. But if you don’t have the time, or don’t have the know-how, an interior stylist/designer is also a master in pulling all of your inspiration imagery together and presenting it to you on a mood board.
I create mood boards for every client I work with. It’s the starting point to ensure that what they’ve told me they love, I’ve understood.
In most cases, when I present a mood board to a client (which shows them the pieces I’m thinking of and the vibe of the space we’re going for), I get the tick of approval to go onto the next stage and start sourcing furniture and decor for them.
Mood boarding allows you to see all of the potential pieces side-by-side, and can give you an accurate picture of what your dream room can look like.
3. We Save you Oodles of Time
The endless trek through furniture and homewares stores can be tough. Especially tough if you have kids in toe. And even tougher if you have a partner who isn’t keen on shopping or disagrees with you.
When you work with an interior stylist/designer, all of the hard work is done for you. I consolidate your ideas, I present you with a mood board, and I provide you with a complete specification sheet that outlines every pieces of furniture for the space. This is all without you even leaving the house.
It’s only after I do all of that for you that we might go shopping to see it in-person. This saves you a tonne of time, not to mention money. How many times have you purchased something after hours of searching, gotten it home and realised it doesn’t work with your other pieces? An interior stylist prevents all of that from happening because we know what works together and what doesn’t.
4. We Save you Money
This is probably the best part for you – raking in all the savings!
Interior stylists, designers and decorators have access to wholesale pricing on furniture and decor, which is much cheaper than retail pricing. Every wholesaler is different and gives different discounts, but on average you can expect to save around 10 to 25% off RRP.
Not everything is going to be purchased wholesale. It totally depends on the project, your needs and wants, and your budget. But trust me when I say that even with paying the stylist their design fee to work on the project, you still come out in front due to all of the wholesale pricing I give you access to.
5. We Find You Unique Pieces
One of the great things about hiring an interior stylist is getting access to furniture and decor you can’t get in retail stores. This means that you end up with a really unique room.
I don’t know about you, but I hate is when I see other people with the exact couch I have, or the exact dining table and chairs. I like to feel as though my room is special, with stunning items people will ask about. There’s nothing better than a friend or family member pining for an item you got through an interior stylist.
6. Ideas you’ve Never Considered
When I go into a client’s home, it’s quite common to hear them say things like “I’d never considered having it that way”.
Bringing in an interior stylist allows a fresh (and qualified) pair of eyes to assess not only what looks good in the room, but also how the room can best function.
I’m known to move furniture around with clients during the consult to try out different layouts. I often also get them questioning why they are using the space as they currently are. Or we move things to other rooms, or change the function of rooms around altogether.
Trust me when I say that an interior stylist will see your home in a way you never could. It’s what we do; make your home operate better and look phenomenal.
