Best Types of Rugs for Pets: Easy Clean and Low Maintenance

It’s time to talk about the best types of rugs for pets, decorating junkies. Because it turns out you can have a four-legged friend and a designer rug that lasts!

The best part: whether you have pets or not, you can win any rug of your choice from my mates at Miss Amara! Keep scrolling for all the details on TLC’s exciting January competition.

When I shopped for my living room rug a few years back, I never much considered what the best pet friendly rug was. I just got what I liked the look of and called it a day. Turns out, that was a rookie error. One I won’t make again. And one I hope you won’t make either.

The type of rugs you buy with your pets in mind will differ from your everyday rugs. But here’s the good news: you definitely don’t have to compromise on style. Let’s explore further and chat to the team from Miss Amara to get the lowdown on all things rugs for pets.

And if you’re keen to look at their extensive range of pet friendly rugs, feel free to do that here. The options on offer are stunning.

Best Types of Rugs for Pets: Materials

There are two material types you need to look out for when shopping for rugs with your fur babies in mind: PET and Polypropylene (PP). I asked Vira from Miss Amara to explain what makes each option so good, and she’s given us all the info below.

PET Rugs for Pets

With our PET rugs, you can literally hose the rug down because it’s composed of recycled plastic bottles so it’s water proof,” Vira explains. “In the event your pet has done a little mess, you can just pick it up and spot clean with warm water and a mild detergent so you don’t have to actually hose it down every time!”

Polypropylene Rugs for Pets

“Because our PP rugs are also stain resistant, it’s just as easy to clean piddles,” Vira tells me. “I like to blot the area down with dry paper towels to get most of the liquid out, spray with a mild detergent and then blot it down to dry once more”.

Vira points out that while you can’t hose down PP rugs like you can with PET rugs, the material in the rug is so easy to clean. And not just pet messes either. For those of us who enjoy a vino, these mishaps are just as easy to sort out.

“For wine spills, I do exactly the same as above. You can literally see the red disappearing”.

These Two Rugs Won’t Trap Odours

Having two cats of my own, I have such paranoia that my home is going to have that common crazy-cat-person smell to it. You know; a combo of litter, food and fur. But Vira tells me that the materials in Miss Amara’s pet-friendly rugs prevent smells from getting in.

“Odours are absolutely a huge issue that you don’t have to worry about with our pet friendly rugs,” she explains. “Because of the type of material they are made up of, the odours don’t absorb in the fibres, making them odour resistant”.

For those of you with puppies in training, Vira tells me there are great odour and stain removal sprays from pet shops that are designed to take the odour out of the rug so your little one won’t go back to the same spot again.

I’ve used cat-specific ones in the past as well and they’re great at preventing your feisty felines returning to the scene of the crime again.

Ensuring Longevity of your Pet Friendly Rugs

The rugs we’ve discussed today are amazing, and with a bit of maintenance they’ll last you years. Vira tells me that you just need to vacuum regularly and ensure you rotate the rug for best results.

“Because our PET and Polypropylene rugs are great for high traffic areas, we recommend vacuuming once every week. But please use something that isn’t too powerful. A gentle vacuum to lift out the dust, soil and grit will help prolong the life of your rug”.

Rotating your pet-friendly rugs every six to 12 months is also great to ensure an even wear of the rug. But of course, the rugs aren’t 100% pet proof; excessive scratching or chewing from your furry friend may cause damage over a prolonged period. So don’t go cancelling those puppy training classes just yet 😉

They’re stunning!!!! Especially the Sahara Turkish Style PINK distressed medallion rug…yes I choose a pink rug! And have decided that this year we are going to make a statement in our entry way. It’s a big space and our master bedroom leads off it as well. At the moment it looks like a place you just walk through to get to our bedroom or answer the door, then we hurry people through it. I want it to have a “wow” moment when people step through our front door! And a gorgeous rug would be my “wow” moment for sure!!! Then I can build on it from there and have a place I’m proud to welcome people into once we open the front door. I love your returns policy, it’s great as it takes the angst about buying something online.

Would you believe my partner and I have bought home 3 different rugs to our new apartment!? I never imagined finding the perfect rug could drive us both so nuts ha! It’s crazy how big of an impact the right (or wrong) rug can make. There’s so much to consider – size, colour, texture, how it feels and most importantly finding something you can agree on. The Edita Flatweave looks like the perfect rug to finally finish off our living room. Love the neutral colour, natural fibers and gorgeous tribal detailing.

Well it’s impossible to comment with just one rug that I like after looking at everything available! Firstly, PET friendly rugs is the most amazing invention ever. My french bulldog is neater than my 2 year old so I think they should be called CHILD/PET friendly rugs. This is the perfect solution for our living room that I want to look stylish and nice but still has to be practice. I would definitely put the Carlita Grey And Ivory Diamond Pattern PET Rug in our living room. I also would love the Alina Diamond Pattern Berber Wool Shag Rug in my master bedroom because what is more luxurious and homely than a beautiful woolen shag rug in a bedroom. Imagine your toes sinking into is plushness as you go to sleep! This competition is the worst because now I have to go and buy new rugs for my house after seeing these!!

The Corozal Charcoal Diamond rug is pet-puuuurfect. I am about to move into a brand new townhouse (built by Metricon) but the location is old. Sontra Blue & White Hand Loomed Cotton Rug

Oh, my! I’ve spent ‘forever’ on Miss Amara’s site. It’s been so much fun placing different rugs in my bedroom. This is such a cool function. Is it just me . . . or is it quite anxiety-provoking to buy something like a rug online? In the past, I haven’t been keen to buy something like this online. There’s just so much scope for it to go wrong – and then there’s all the pain and aggravation of trying to return the item.

Today I’ve been able to see how gorgeous the Sontra rug would look in my bedroom.

It is such a HARD CHOICE! All the rugs are just “soooo”lovely! Being pet friendly is a huge bonus with “2 black munchkins with 4 paws a piece”!!! The “Easter Bunny” brought Cavoodles instead of eggs!!! Go figure………… Then add that to ongoing renovations!! For some reason there are 2 that really speak to me and our new concrete tiles with light & dark greys and gold “flecks”! The KHUSUS grey-yellow-distressed floral medallion rug and the EVORA blue and gold floral medallion rug. I cannot choose as I love both and am sure they would “work” with our new colour scheme! Would love to add them to our decor. Thanks so very much!!

Ellen Black And White Tassel Wool Rug. Nothing beats a wool rug. The monochrome shades and neutral base of this rug will complement our current decor.

Hard choice – I’m floored (!) by the variety and style but I love the colour and pattern of the Ladik Orange and Beige Transitional Wool Rug. Anything wool is always great quality too!

For our home, the Kwame Tribal Pattern Flatweave Rug would be ideal, a chic addition to the bare living room floor, friendly for our resident pooch and subtly evocative of intrepid and exotic pre-kid travel adventures, especially the Himalaya where we met and fell in love, trekking on the roof of the world.

What a near-impossible task! How to choose just 1 rug from such a gorgeous selection? I just spent the last 90minuets playing with the fantastic online tool which allows you to see the rug in your own home by simply uploading an image and then, seconds later, presto, photographic proof!! I’m obsessed!

I just purchased a new couch making all my other furnishings look rather sad now. The problem was I had no clear idea of the style direction I wanted to go in until I played with this amazingly convenient modern marvel, which helps take away some of the guesswork. Now the hardest part is no longer imagining what the rug would look like in situ, BUT choosing only one!

If I was fortunate enough to win the competition and replace my old frayed rug, I would have to choose the Vaasa Grey Felted Wool Hand Knotted Rug. Although, I would be equally happy with at least 3 others!! LOVE MISS AMARA!

    Fingers crossed! Thanks, Megs
