A few years back I decided my living room needed a rug. Naturally, as I was well into my obsession and fixation with all things IKEA, I headed there first to look through their range and hunt one down. I came home with the Ikea Lappljung Ruta rug that day and since then have noticed it pop up a billion times on Instagram in readers’ homes.
So what makes this rug so popular and is it worth the spend?
The best bits about Lappljung Ruta
For me, budget is always a concern. Rugs can be pricey, right? As I’m not yet in my forever home (still renting my humble abode), I’ll be holding off on any extravagant rug purchases until then. Come to think of it, I don’t know if I’ll even get a pricey rug, because some of the lower-end ones in terms of price point can be just as good.
The Lappljung Ruta rug was $99 when I purchased it, so it was totally speaking my language in terms of cost. I’m also a sucker for a geometric pattern and needed some black and white hue in my living space to ground the assortment of colours that were going on in there (I like to pack a tonne of colour into a room if I can make it work). So this rug ticked a lot of the boxes. It’s pretty thick, too, and can withstand my cats clawing into it.
Come to think of it, it’s also really easy to clean. I’ve had my cat vomit on it numerous times and the stain has lifted really easily (she’s got issues that one!).
The Bad Bits about the Ikea Lappljung Ruta
I’ve lived with the rug a while now, so I’ve had the time to think about what I would change about it (yes, I think about these first world problems – it’s completely normal).
The one and only thing I’d amend in the rug’s design is the blue and green trim down two of the sides. It’s an odd inclusion considering the colours are in tones that aren’t the easiest to match, so I’d much prefer they be gone (I believe IKEA released a larger, similar rug minus the trim, though. Let me know if you have it because I couldn’t find it on their website).
I recently noticed the IKEA Sillerup rug (above) on a visit to the Tempe store and am deeming it the new Lappljung Ruta. It’s still bears a striking black and white pattern but the design feels fresher and more interesting, yet it’s distinctly IKEA and will still work wonders for grounding a space.
The Verdict
At such a low price point you’d be mad not to give the Ikea Lappljung Ruta a go. They’re great for kids rooms, play rooms, living space and family rooms – and work with a tonne of furniture and decor colours and styles.
Do you have this rug? I’d love to get your take on it in the comments below. Is it winning or woeful and what furniture and decor have you matched it with?
Want more from Ikea? Should you buy their outdoor furniture? What about the Friheten sofa?
I recently got this rug and placed it in my bedroom. Love it except for the chemical smell so I have not been sleeping in the bedroom because of the nasty smell emanating from the rug. Do you guys have the same experience? How long did the smell last? What’s that chemical smell? Is it safe for our health?
Hey Philly – that’s so odd. Mine had a ‘new rug’ smell as most do, but I wouldn’t call it chemically. It lost the smell a few weeks in I’d say, but I would be inclined to takes yours back if the smell is that overpowering and it’s preventing you from sleeping.
Great post!!! Thank you 🙂 I just brought this rug (without the teal stripe) but am kind of regretting it because I don’t know how to introduce other patterns into the room (mostly cushions). Would love to know if you think bold black & white stripey and damask patterns could work?
How did you get it without the stripe?
Thank you for this. I’ve been wondering.
Just wondering if it’s crawler friendly. My new place has hardwood flooring and would love something comfy for my son that won’t hurt his knees when crawling. Thoughts?
Hey there. It isn’t the softest rug in the world in all honesty. Your son wont hurt his knees but he’s not going to feel like he’s in a plush wonderland either. Hope that helps 🙂
Does it shed??? I really love it but I’m scared it will shed!
Hey Frankie. No shedding at all 🙂 on the edges it gets a bit tatty after a while but I think that’s the fault of my cats and not IKEA
in terms of cleaning, ive got 2 small kids, do you think its easy to clean? obvsiouslly not talking about blackberry/blueberry stains.
Hey Bites. Yes – very easy to clean. I’ve had stains lift out really easily – even a few red wine ones lol! 😉
Thanks! Do you think it’ll “go” with a gray IKEA ektorp 3 seater? I’ve also got 2 IKEA tullsta armchairs in charcoal Gray. Thanks hun x (new to this sort of stuff, I’m in need of design advice
I have this rug and just sharpied over the blue/green part!
Yoy, my dear, are a genius! That colour strip was the only thing about this rug that was bothering me. Problem solved!
So didnthe sharpie really cover the green stripe? I’m thinking of buying it but the green strip is holding me back.
I have this without the green! It’s probably just out of stock on their website (they don’t show up when there’s no stock)! Love it for the kids – don’t mind if they drop stuff on it as it’s such a good price!
I totally should have purchased the one you have Kim. I just makes it more versatile. The strip has been bothering me a bit lol! But yes, you’re right. For the price you can’t beat it.
Yep, I have this rug, Chris. It made an instant impact in our lounge room, and I agree that it is quite thick. In retrospect, I wish I had scotchguarded it. My kids have trashed it! I have tried to spot clean, but discoloured patches remain. For the price though, I really don’t mind. The nw one you mentioned above looks great!
I love the new rug, and I agree so easy to ckean, kow pile with kitties.
