One of the things I love about us here at TLC Interiors is that we don’t design the one style, repeating it over and over again. We really get to play with a tonne of different aesthetics, and we revel in the challenge of delivering something new each time.
For our latest project the brief was ‘minimal luxe interior’. We had a lot of fun bringing the dream to life for our clients, whose new-build home in Highett provided the perfect backdrop for the carefully considered furniture and decor we brought into the property.
Scroll on as we take you inside our latest minimal luxe interior design project and share a few of our style secrets with you. Because as you know about us by now, we’re an open book!
A Minimal Luxe Interior the Moment You Enter
As soon as you swing open the front door you notice the long hallway leading your eye toward the back of the property. It’s a beautiful sightline, so we didn’t want to clutter up the entry because we want visitors to be drawn down the hall.
We needed to create a moment of pause though, so we chose to bring in a black sideboard with mirror above on the left wall. It makes for a striking contrast against the white paint, with the mirror reflecting a large-scale Dina Broadhurst artwork that hangs across from it.
To the right as you enter, a moody home office awaits, which you can see below. The builder, Thomas Archer, installed some stunning cabinetry, which we elevated by introducing a desk and chair, stunning Michael Bond artwork, plus styling elements for the shelves.
Past the Staircase, a Chic Living Room Awaits
Art really brought a lot of the colour and drama to this home, and I love that you can see it from different vantage points as you walk around. You really don’t need much of it to make an impact, and in this interior is certainly does.
In the living room at the back of the property you can look up and see the bold Brent Rosenberg artwork sitting at the top of the staircase. Another of his works sits to the right of the TV, and they’re both pretty divine.
The approach in this living room was to continue the minimal luxe vibes by keeping things monochromatic for the most part. A large black floor rug grounds the space, while a clean-line sofa from King Living and a marble coffee table deliver understated sophistication.
Soft Grey Tones Bridge the Black and White Gap
We went with a grey sheer curtain in the space from our supplier, Life By Shades. Grey was an important element to include in the scheme because it bridges the gap, softening the contrast between the black and white elements in the room. The sofa is in a grey fabric for the same reason.
Of course, we love a pop of colour. The clients had their heart set on a soft pink velvet armchair from The Cullen Design which we were in full support of. It speaks nicely to the artwork in the space and is a real wow moment in the room. It’s super comfortable too.
The decorative elements were kept minimal. We didn’t over-stuff coffee tables, side tables or the TV unit with a lot of pieces. The clients are minimalists so I had to curb my wicked ways and show restraint when it came to the cushion count; less was more for this one.
The Dining Room Took a Darker Approach
The dining room that borders the living took a darker approach, and this was intentional. Because so much light floods in through the windows (even when the sheers are closed) there were no concerns around the space feeling gloomy. It’s quite the opposite actually; there seems to be this constant sense of light and airiness.
Because there was so much black in the oval dining table, dining chairs and sideboard, texture was important. Not only did we want to see the timber grain in the pieces, but the sideboard was selected with a rattan front to ensure there was some tactility at play in the space.
The pendant light that suspends above the table is a favourite, as are the two tinted charcoal mirrors that sit side-by-side over the sideboard. We’ve used two smaller mirrors like this in our Hampton project; it’s such a clever (and cost effective) way to get light bouncing around the room. And the tint just elevates the look.
The Kitchen Is a Minimal Luxe Design Dream
As much as I’d like to take credit for the kitchen, that wasn’t TLC. That’s courtesy of the builder. It’s such a chic space, don’t you think? The home owners were tossing up whether to go black paneling under the kitchen island to which I said, you must! The result is stunning.
We sourced the bar stools to place at the kitchen island, which are so comfortable and work perfectly with the scheme. The leather finish is the icing on the cake. We’ve shown you our top 50 bar stools with high backs on the blog before, and I’m going to have to add these to the list.
We did the smaller styling elements here, but to be honest it didn’t need much. The stone is doing all of the work and it’s even more impressive in-person. Shoutout to the owners’ fiddle leaf fig as well; if only mine grew this well at home!
The Main Bedroom Upstairs Achieves Cohesion
As with the vibe downstairs, the main bed upstairs was a black, white and grey colour story. And again, we allowed artworks to be the stars of the show. A stunning Dina Broadhurst sits over the bed, while across from it a Michael Bond framed canvas pops agains the wall.
That’s not to say the other pieces aren’t special. The console table you see above is another fave of mine from the project. The arched details are really something special. It’s from Trit but sadly it’s no longer in stock for those of you playing at home. A luscious profile though.
And yes, those flowers are fake. While I’ve been doing a lot of real plants for clients of late (and this project features some), the clients were happy to include a few fakies. Here’s a list of our fave flower and plant suppliers if you want to hunt out some of your own.
So there you have it – project complete!

Stunning! Love the interiors and all the furniture.
What a stunning Style! Minimal Luxe Interior Design – this home well and truly lives up to its name and is simple beautiful. I liked the colour palette of the bedroom, the houndstooth cushions with the deep purple bedspread, which continued in the loungeroom with the deep purple rug and magnificent bold artwork with splashes of dense colours on the staircase. I love how the home is beautifully ‘well balanced’ and has such a sense of contrast and harmony to it. The kitchen Island is also a favourite.
Congratulations!
