  1. I’m torn. On the one hand, I want to applaud most of the couples for providing simple, stylish and functional guest bedrooms without a bunch of obnoxious bells and whistles. But, on the other hand, it makes the room reveals a little dull. I want Hayden and Sara’s guest bedroom because of its simplicity, but it doesn’t translate into entertaining TV. At least Kerrie and Spence were able to provide a number of WTF moments with the “library” and WIR in their very, VERY special guest (presumably the owners of that apartment will be hosting HRH Queen Elizabeth or similar).

I like Bianca and Carla’s room, except for the black curtains. But, I’m not sure if I’d find the timber ceiling overpowering and even claustrophobic in person, especially when in bed. The bedside wall lights are also ridiculous.

I do like that Black Mango bedhead used by Hans and Courtney. And it’s surprisingly affordable for The Block. Speaking of which, are they no longer telling us how much the teams spent on their rooms? I thought it was great that they finally started doing that again, even if the numbers were unrealistic given the “discounted” trades, “discounted” furnishings and artwork and assorted freebies they all get.

  2. I really love Norm and Jess’s room, and maybe it’s entirely because of the headboard – I am absolutely in love with emerald green. I love all things mid century modern, and emerald is that!
I do have one big issue, and it’s in most seasons of the block.. what the hell is wrong with beside table lamps?? Why must they all be a hanging pendant!? I find them all to be so over the top, and too high? Do these people not read books in bed? It baffles me..

  3. They need big storage/walk in robes as these apmts are going to be rented out to young professionals sharing the flat, who want the lux life.
They all need to realise that once on tv the cool paint colours end up looking stark and uninviting, it’s why the bold colours and textures work so well in Block rooms, it translates onto the screen. So far the only room I’ve thought wow was Carla and Bianka’s bathroom.

  4. Loved the colour palette and overall feel of Courtney and Hans’ room. I think they were unlucky not to score their second room win. Really excited to see how their apartment progresses, so far they are my favourites.

  5. Oh you know I got a lot to say, Chris! Almost as much as you haha. Kerrie and Spence – that silver bedhead is REVOLTING. Why throw that colour bedhead, with that awful sheen against a boring white wall? There is no presence or purpose and it just feels so BORING. They did have a pretty rad black rectangular mirror with rounded corners, so I guess there’s that. Norm and Jess – I’m digging this room, although (and it may just be how it photographs) but does that side of the room just feel a little squat? It’s like that whole side of the room just feels a little squished to the floor and it’s probably those real dainty wall sconces (that do nothing for actual lighting) that make it feel like that. Pendants would’ve been my choice here. The only thing that saves the squashed feel is the ceiling-to-floor curtains – I’m loving them. And the cabinetry is great! You thought shoes at the bottom, I thought pillows; either way it’s great that the cabinetry has open compartments. Hayden and Sara – what a boringggggg room. Again, it’s probably the way it is in photos, but that feature wall is defo not a ‘feature’. It’s a nothing wall. It just blends in with the similar coloured bedhead (which is almost as awful as K&S’ bedhead). The glass desk makes it feel even sparser because it just draws the eye through it, making it feel even more unresolved. Hans and Courtney – that bed is the best. I SUCK at styling beds and I wish I could deliver that; the pillow placement is wicked! Those closets are the best I’ve seen; the texture and the black handles. It is everything. I usually hate underlit furniture too (especially in kitchens), but here it is perfect! Lastly, Bianca and Carla – I still love that ceiling! I’m also digging how it has a white background rather than the black. It’s the same ceiling with a bit of a twist. Hopefully, we don’t see it in every room though! I’m also realllyyyy in love with that brown leather armchair paired with the monstera! What a corner! I am so shocked (and loving that fact that) for the only female-female team, they are delivering some seriously stellar masculine vibes. It’s right up my alley!

  6. Hans and Courtney’s were the definite winners this week! It was the only room that felt like every element was working. The others were a bit of a let down, with at least one design piece or furniture not working with the space. Agree with you about the wood paneling, I bet it looks amazing in person but in photos and on tv didn’t do it justice.

  7. These bedrooms all felt very last year! As much as I
LOVE a velvet and fabric bed head, I’m so OVER seeing them. Surely there’s something else on the market? So far I’m disappointed with this year’s The Block. I feel like the teams could up the ante, but they’re all just playing it “safe” and what does pop is really trendy. I dunno, I just feel like these apartments lack personality and soul. But then again, we have only seen them deliver two rooms each.

  8. Yes! I’m hanging out for wallpaper and some individuality. Everyone is playing it pretty safe at the moment. What about the way people take their criticism from the judges. Most people take it on the chin and think about how to fix it and do better next time except for Sara who takes it all too personally. I thought they could of done better than that. I liked their layout better than Kerrie and Spence but why does no one have any plants??????? Seriously frustrating!!

  9. Oh I was literally screaming at the TV – WHERE is the wallpaper!!! All the rooms were so boring like a hotel room – boutique on a budget and no time. I really think the contestants would benefit from looking at Italian, French and NYC high end living spaces with layered decorating. If I see one more cement grey colour palette I might just give up on the Block altogether. Come on people there’s no need to embrace our convict origins so readily!

  10. As a fellow designer, I couldn’t agree more with your comments! I always jump straight onto Instagram after the show wraps up to read your thoughts after I’ve been yelling at the TV for the last hour and a half to know I’m not alone in my views haha.
Is it just me or is the draping and roller blind in Bianca and Carla’s room an eyesore? Why black? It’s the first thing I see in their room. And I agree, the timber panelling worked wonders in the bathroom, but maybe should have been kept as a feature in the wet areas only. I hope we don’t see this in every room. I’m already tired of it.
Silver bed heads against white walls scream boring! I was surprised to see two.. who’s selling these?
Maybe I’m feeling a little bratty because last year everyone achieved luxe in the right way and this year it’s just half done. I guess I have to remind myself that I’m expecting a lot from people who aren’t designers.
