If it’s two things my interior design clients love, it’s a bright room and greenery. So today I’m showcasing my fave white bedroom ideas with plants in them to combine two of our most sought-after home inclusions.
Nothing makes a better high contrast moment in a space than lush green tones against crisp white walls. It really can’t be beat. And if you happen to be a black thumb, don’t stress! All of these bedroom plant ideas could work just as well with some fake plants instead.
Scroll on as I unveil some wonderful ideas for styling indoor plants against a white palette, and drop me a comment at the end of the post if you’re feeling inspired.
1. Plants at the Head of the Bed
I’m shining a light on some outta-the-box ideas straight off the bat with this one. What better way to create a statement in bedroom than with a cluster of plants of different shapes and sizes at the head of the bed?
The white sheer curtains in the room add to the soothing vibes, as does the all-white bedding and the mattress sitting right on the floor. There’s something wonderfully grounded about this bedroom vibe, don’t you think?
2. Enjoy the Benefits of a Fern
Whether it’s a Boston Fern, Maidenhair Fern or any other type from the same family, a fern in your white bedroom equals biophilic bliss – and they help reduce indoor air pollutants.
Given that ferns need at least a couple of hours of bright, filtered or indirect light each day, a crisp white room with windows is the perfect environment for them.
Just be careful not to leave them in direct sunlight for hours at a time; it can scorch their poor fronds. And nobody wants a burnt frond.
3. Introduce Some Terracotta
An all white interior can often feel a little sterile, so while the plants will work some magic to cure that, it’s also a wise idea to add in a few other complementary tones.
Terracotta is a great colour to add to your bedroom through a plant pot. It won’t dominate the space too much but will add some colour and possible texture to break up any monotony.
4. Use a Hanging Rack to Showcase Your Plants
This is a great way to display plants in a rental bedroom, but really anyone can give this idea a go – and why wouldn’t you!?
I love how the clothes hanger at the end of the bed becomes a stage for you to hang a collection of plants on. And the beauty of it being on wheels is that you can move it around the room as you wish.
It also provides a nice green wall at the end of the bed; a unique look to wake up to in the morning, don’t you think?
5. Install a Plant Shelf in Your White Bedroom
There’s something about a trailing plant delicately cascading over the edge of a shelf that makes just me happy. When there’s a collection of them together above a bed like this, the bliss goes next-level.
This plant display idea is a really easy way to create an unconventional accent wall. And if you don’t want to get up there to water them all the time, this concept would shine just as well using artificial plants.
6. Place a Devil’s Ivy Up High
I have Devil’s Ivy (or pothos plants) in my own home so I can attest to how great a job they do in a white bedroom without requiring much care. Yep, when it comes to a low-maintenance plant, this one is the GOAT.
I love the idea above of popping a plant like this on a high surface like a freestanding wardrobe so it can trail down. Devil’s Ivy love bright light and only ask you for water about once a week. What’s not to love?
An English Ivy would work just as well here.
7. Style Your Plants in a Woven Basket
If you love the ethereal nature of your white space it’s understandable you might not want to colour it up too much. The best way to keep it neutral without it getting boring it so ensure there’s a mix of texture at play.
The best way to do this: a plant in a decorative round basket made of rattan, jute or whicker. Anything woven in a subdued tone like this will work wonders in your white bedroom.
8. Go Boho With Your Bad Self
There’s no interior design style that works with plants as well as the Bohemian one. There’s something about the relaxed nature of this aesthetic that elevates the greenery in the room spectacularly.
If you want to create a cozy bedroom, try a boho approach; a low bed, timber accents, white sheer curtains, texture galore and house plants in a variety of sizes scattered randomly around the room.
9. Train a Plant to Crawl Across Your Bedroom
I have two words for you: Command Hooks. Get these easy-stick (and easy-remove) transparent hooks from a hardware store and train a hanging plant to crawl across your bedroom walls.
This is a great idea for a small bedroom where the footprint might not allow for a large plant to dominate. Devil’s Ivy or pothos, as already mentioned, are the best plants for this, but so are philodendron.
10. Let One Big Plant Fill an Empty Corner
Sometimes less is more when it comes to bedroom plants. There’s no need to fill a corner with multiple plants at different shapes and sizes. Sometimes, one tall plant can look more successful standing proud on its own.
Now, I have had my own issues with Fiddle Lead Figs over the years, but there’s no denying that they’re a lush green plant that will never go out of style.
If you can keep it alive, let it be the star in your bedroom by having it stand along in a large decorative pot.
11. Hang a Plant from Your Bedroom Ceiling
In a small space, you have to work with what you’ve got. Plant hanging from the ceiling are great options in tighter areas. You still get gorgeous plants in your cozy bedroom without impacting square footage.
The only thing to be mindful of is the need to get up and water them regularly, so keep a step-ladder under your bed (or inside a storage bed like these gas-lift beauties).
12. Place a Plant Beside a Mirror in the Bedroom
Want two gorgeous green plants for the price of one? Simply park your fave piece of greenery in front of a leaner or wall-fixed mirror. It’s a great way to double the look of your plants in the bedroom.
Mirrors also bounce light around the space to make it feel bigger (perfect if your bedroom is a low-light conditions kinda space).
13. Bring Some Plant Prints Onto Your Bedding
Tropical Plants like Palms work beautifully in a bedroom, but don’t feel like you’re stuck having to have a large one in the corner of the room.
Try a more minimalist approach by chopping a few smaller segments from what you have outside and popping them in a vase on your bedside table.
Bonus points here for the tropical quilt cover set and throw pillows, which really teaming with the theme and taps into the sought-after Nature Interior Design Trend.
14. Draw the Eye With An Oversized Pot
There’s a lot to be said about how the size and scale of something in a room can dramatically effect where your eye goes.
In this bedroom, having the plant in a much larger pot than it needs is a great way to draw your eye right to it. It does a great job in telling you where to look.
The white linens teams with a hint of mustard makes this bedroom a calm one that’s anything but boring.
15. Embrace the Wild Nature of a Monstera
I have a monstera at home myself so I can attest to how wild and unbridled it is. The Monstera (Swiss Cheese Plant) grows in a rather random, organic way. In a bedroom design that features a lot of clean lines it works to soften the space.
Monstera’s enjoy filtered, indirect sunlight. Make sure yours sits near big windows, but not right in front of them, to ensure it’s with you for years to come.
16. Have Plants Either Side of Your Bedroom Window
As an interior designer I’m always looking for ways to connect rooms to a bit of nature. How do we bring the outdoors in, and blur the lines between interior and exterior?
The image above is a good example of how to do it: position plants in your white bedroom near the window, and then have some equally lovely ones outside.
This can almost extend the feel of your bedroom, as if it goes out into your garden.
17. Let Plants Be the Only Colour
This is a post on white bedroom ideas with plants, after all, so it make sense that a key tip be: abandon all other colour in the room and let the plants be the moment!
The minimal look bedroom above is the perfect backdrop for the plants to be the star of the show. Everything else is the supporting player.
Monstera plants love a humid environment so if your bedroom is on the warmer side they’re a great choice.
18. Style a Low-Maintenance Agave in a Glass Vase
Agave are super low-maintenance, so if you’re not the best green thumb going, this plant could be the best choice for your white bedroom.
Simply refresh its water every couple of weeks and sit it in bright indirect light and it’ll reward you with its beauty. A small pot or glass vase is all it needs to sit in too.
19. Don’t Forget Small Plants on Windowsills
A plant lover knows that every possible surface is up for grabs when it comes to giving your little green friends a place to live. In your white bedroom, do not forget your windowsills.
Plants that love a lot of natural light like a snake plant, Jade or String of Pearls are all ideal to bring some life to your bedroom windows and they look great from the outside too.
20. Elevate Plants on a Stack of Books
This applies to white bedroom ideas with plants, but it’s also a general styling hack for plants in a living room, dining room or kitchen that you want to elevate.
Placing a stack of books under a decorative plant pot is a great way to add height to the vignette, and they’re such an affordable homewares piece too, so you’ll save money while you’re at it.
21. Go for a Uniform Look to Inject Formality
A lot of the white bedrooms with plants you’ve seen so far have quite a scatters or random styling approach. But there’s a lot to be said about taking things in a formal direction.
Popping up a makeshift shelf and then spacing the plants out equally on it does allow your eye to take in the beauty of each one. Something to try if you find the more clustered approach too messy a look.
22. Avoid Mass-Produced Plant Pots
I do love me some vintage treasure hunting. If you’re in the same boat and like to shop salvage stores for pieces with a story, do it with your plant pots.
A white bedroom can sometimes feel a little cold and clinical, so popping in items that have a more rustic patina can add heart and soul to your interior.
23. Don’t Forget Plants in Your Wardrobe
A low light plant like the Peace Lily is the perfect choice for a space that needs some greenery, like a walk-in-robe. Peace Lilies can thrive without natural sunlight, and the white flowers look gorgeous.
When decorating a main bedroom in your home with plants it’s always good to think about the zones that neighbour it. Your robe is one, and the other all-important zone is below…
24. Don’t Forget Plants in Your Ensuite
I always say that if you’re decorating your bedroom but not your ensuite, you’re only telling half the story. These two zones sit side-by-side so you really should connect them through a common element (colour, pattern etc).
Indoor plants in your bathroom are a great way to create cohesion, and as you can see in the photo above they look great hanging from the ceiling.
25. Suspend a Feature Plant Moment from the Ceiling
Here’s an idea for the adventurous plant lover: suspending a shelf from the ceiling and hanging an array of plants from it. Talk about an eye-catching installation.
This will require a little extra time when it comes to watering, but you could do it with fake plants for a much easier-to-maintain look.
You’ll also need to think about where the light fixtures are in the room and plan around them accordingly. This white bedroom with indoor plants idea is worth the effort though.
26. Plants at Different Heights to Add Interest
You can have so much fun moving plants around in your bedroom to find the perfect spot for them. And don’t think they they have to be a similar height either.
A really simply way to showcase your plants is to elevate them on a table in front of window. They not only look lovely from the exterior, but they can add a level of privacy for you too, during the day when your curtains are open.
27. Indoor Plants and Pine are a Winning Combo
When considering displaying your indoor plants on a shelf in your bedroom, you can’t go past the rustic qualities of pine.
There’s something about a pine shelf that works so well when greenery is on it. I think it’s the fact that you can see the timber gran running through it. It gives off a grounded, earthy feel.
Pine floating shelves are so affordable too. Bunnings, for example, sells them for under $30.
28. Stack Planters on Tables for Added Height
Perhaps you can’t afford a tall, mature plant. Or perhaps you just want to shine a light on one plant in particular in your white bedroom. Either way the solution is simple: pop a planter on top of a side table to give it a pedestal moment of its own.
The image above depicts this concept perfectly. You can see in the corner by the window that there’s a timber side table beneath a metal plant pot, and it works perfectly.
29. Cluster Succulents on Smaller Tables
Succulents couldn’t be easier to grow and take care of, and they look awesome in a white bedroom when they’re clustered together on a bedside table.
You don’t have to restrict them to this piece of furniture though. Consider grouping succulents on your windowsill, chest of drawers, or as you’ll see in a moment… a marvellous mantle.
30. Utilise the Mantle if Your Bedroom Has One
If you’re lucky enough to have a mantle in your bedroom, please know I am insanely jealous. They not only bring character and charm to a white room, but they’re also the ideal spot to house your favourite indoor plants.
Mantles don’t tend to have a lot of depth though, so you’ll likely have your plant in a small pot. As you can see in the image above though, the plant itself can still run wild, cascading down the side of your mantle perfectly.
31. Pair Plants with Artworks in Your White Bedroom
This is a nice way to bring in some neutral colours to the room. A little light grey, brown or beige in an artwork can pair rather nicely with an indoor plant.
It could be on a shelf above your bed, as seen in the image above, or it could be an artwork and plant together on a mantle, side table of chest of drawers. There are so many possibilities.
32. Hang Plants from Your Curtain Rods
If you’ve got some plants in your white bedroom that love lots of light, why not get them off tabletops by hanging them in front of your window?
Hanging them from curtain rods like this is a great idea for renters who don’t want to drill holes into the wall or ceiling, plus they look so chic when housed in the right pots.
33. Same Pots, Different Plants
As I mentioned earlier, cohesion in a space is important. You want certain elements across the bedroom to repeat (colour, pattern, or texture) so the room feels resolved.
The image above is a nice representation of this. By having ZZ plants in one grey pot and a mother-in-law’s tongue in the other, you get variety in the greenery in the room, but a uniform approach when it comes to the pots. A winning approach!
34. Small Plants on the Floor = Big Impact
Many people think that tall pot plants go on the floor, small pot plants go up on desks, bedside tables and windowsills. But that’s really not the case, and the image above proves it.
The plant on the floor by the desk gives what would be an awkward, empty space a sense of purpose. It draws the eye, and it makes working from a white bedroom like this a whole lot more inviting. It always pays to think outside the box when it comes to plant styling.
35. Fiberglass Planters For Easy Moving
Smaller plants in your room are a cinch to move; they’re so lightweight and easily portable. The larger plants, however, might prove a bit trickier – especially if the pot they’re in is heavy.
Fiberglass planters are a godsend for that very reason. They can give you the look of concrete, for example, but be so light that you won’t have any issues moving them about your space.
Nobody wants to style plants in their bedroom worrying about a back injury, after all.
36. Pair Plants with White Sheer Curtains
The calming effect of sheer curtains can’t be stated enough. They really transform a space and I specify them all the time in my work as an interior designer for that very reason.
Add plants into the mix and the romantic bedroom vibes go next level. There’s something about a sheer material and a lush green plant that just works. They marry so nicely to evoke a light, bright, ethereal feel. And who doesn’t want that feeling in their white bedroom?
37. Work Plants into Bedside Tables
When considering white bedroom ideas with plants, you’d be wise to get creative and pack them into every nook and cranny you can.
Inside a bedside table is where the magic can really happen, so if you’re going to purchase this piece of furniture, make sure it has a small shelf built into it where you could house a small plant. The image above shows you how gorgeous this can be. Try it!
38. Add Some Black Accents to Your White Bedroom
If your white bedroom has a lot of natural lighting in it, it’ll be able to take a few black accents in artworks, bedding or plant pots. And to be fair, this is a chic vibe you’d be wise to adopt if you’re feeling like all that white is feeling a bit too stark.
When decorating a black and white room, always ensure one of the tones is the more dominant one. Say, 70% white in the room and 30% black. Then add in your dark green plants and you have a room that feels very designer indeed.
39. Enjoy the Health Benefits of a Spider Plant
Indoor air pollutants are on the rise, but it they can be combatted with a little help from air-purifying plants like the spider plant, which works to improve air quality in your bedroom.
Outside of the health benefits, they also look beautiful. These particular plants can be easily propagated too. Simply place a cutting in a new pot of soil and it’ll take off in no time.
40. Bring a Ladder Shelf into your Bedroom
Plants of various shades stacked on the rungs of a ladder shelf is a nice way to add dimension to your white bedroom. Throw in a few terracotta pots for a little colour and your on your way to create a white bedroom that’s packed with charm and interest.
Bonus points awarded to the white bedroom above, which is also hanging their plants from curtain rods (such a clever way to display your greenery).
41. Jump on the Olive Tree Trend
Does the olive tree need natural light, moderate light, or no light at all? These worries are a thing of the past because the olive tree trend can be embraced without buying the real thing.
Artificial olive trees are all the rage right now in the world of interiors. You can get them from places like Pillow Talk. They’re so good because for starters, zero maintenance. But also the long thin trunk means they can squeeze into corners of the room really easily.
