For me, planning a nursery pretty much started as soon as I got that nice big positive test (maybe even before, if truth be told!). Having three little ones of my own as well as designing hundreds of spaces for my clients, I know a thing or two on how to get the best out of the space but also to reflect the family I’m working for.
In today’s post I’m going to share some of my baby room design tips and tricks with you, so that you can get well on your way to creating a nursery space you (and your impending little one) will love.
How to Get Your Baby Room Design Right
1. The Cot
How lucky are we that there are so many beautiful and varied styles of cots on the market now? When I had my eldest, it was a choice of white or dark timber…..and that’s about it.
Don’t jump straight in and order the cot. Think about what style of nursery you want to create, how you are going to decorate the room. Are you going to use the cot for more than 1 child? The most adaptable cot, is simple. It’s white and square.
2. Gender Neutral
Keeping the sex of the baby a surprise but worried about how to decorate the nursery? Designing a gender neutral room does not have to be dull.
When I’ve worked with clients who didn’t know if they were having a boy or a girl, we kept the base really simple (usually white and grey) and then I provided them with options to add touches of pink/blue after the baby is born. Alternatively, keep it all white but add texture throughout the room to give it warmth.
3. Nursery Chair
So here’s the thing; everyone has a different opinion on if a chair in the nursery is a priority or not. For me, it’s a necessity. You are going to clock up some serious hours nursing, holding and soothing a little one…..so I think it’s important to invest in a good quality chair.
When it comes to the seating aspect of baby room design, I always prefer chairs with tall backs (to rest your weary head on), and making sure that your bottom is higher than your knees (you don’t want to have a sleeping baby in your arms and have to leverage yourself up and out of the chair – trust me… been there, done that!).
4. Reflect Your Family
I’m sure you’ve all seen it; sometimes, where you are scrolling through Pinterest or Instagram and you start to see the same cookie cutter rooms (you think… hang on, are they the same room or has the design just been replicated by someone else?).
For me being on trend, is completely different to being trend driven. I don’t want my client’s rooms to look like anyone else’s and I think when you are putting together a nursery for yourself, you should want an individual space too.
So, really think about your family. Is there a song you sing? A saying you love? A place you have visited? Family pets? What song did you dance to at your wedding? There are beautiful ways to inject personality when you’re putting your baby room design together.
5. Completely and Utterly Stuck?
Are you completely overwhelmed by ideas? Start by gathering ideas on Pinterest (don’t forget to put it on ‘secret’ if you don’t want others to know what you are planning!).
It doesn’t necessarily have to be nursery images or nursery products – just images that appeal to you. Love the rug in that Lounge Room? Pin it. Think that pattern on the wall is pretty cool? Pin it. You will start to see an underlying ‘theme’, and you can develop your ideas from there.
