It was such a mixed bag of rooms this week at The Blocktagon that it’s hard to pinpoint a team who were deserving to win. With three spaces to show – study, laundry and powder room – I found most of the teams got some spaces bang on-point while others fell completely flat.
As always, I have a different opinion to what the judges had to say, so let’s take a look at the five teams’ rooms and check out what worked and what didn’t.
Kingi and Caro’s Study, Laundry & Powder Room

I have to say I was a little bit disappointed with these spaces, probably the study area moreso than anything else. Although Darren was head over heels for the paint colour in the study (and has it in his house) I thought it felt quite dark and gloomy in the room. Combined with the heaviness of that shelf, the desk and the chair, it all feels quite depressing. I’d much rather work from the powder room or laundry.
I didn’t mind the feature tiles in the powder room (you know I love a feature tile), but I thought it competed with the mirror. It’s a ‘one of the other’ moment for me here.

Luke and Ebony’s Study, Laundry & Powder Room
Maybe it’s just me, but again this is a study that feels quite heavy and weighed down. In a space that doesn’t look to be receiving much natural light, I think it was an error to go with so much dark, heavy wood furniture. The shelving in the study was a grand idea but I think a lighter colour could have helped open up the space. The best part about this room was the stunning artwork (link to buy it is below).
The powder room was nice. I don’t particularly think the feature tiles were right here though. They’re giving me a slight headache. All the judges were impressed with the new direction Luke and Ebony are headed in. It’s a definite award for most improved, I’ll give them that.

Dean and Shay’s Study, Laundry & Powder Room
Again with the dark paint colour, guys! I love me a dramatic feature wall, don’t get me wrong, but a study is a small space where you’re going to be spending a lot of time (if you work from home especially). I would not enjoy sitting in that corner. I think the wood they used for the desk was divine and I did enjoy the artwork, but this was not a tick in my books.
The judges weren’t fans of the angled tiles in their laundry and I have to agree. They’re great tiles but I think they were trying too hard to do something interesting. In the powder room, oh my Lord: amazing. That tapware and toilet roll holder are a gift from the decor gods and I adore the wall and floor tiles. One of my fave bathrooms on The Block to date.

Andy and Whitney’s Study, Laundry & Powder Room
Andy and Whitney’s study was to die for, for the most part, anyway. Loved the shell here. Large, light and bright. They were wise to make a feature wall so subdued and the carpet makes it feel very welcoming and comfortable. The shelving was gorgeous too, though I do think they went a bit overboard with it. The desk was a fail in my humble opinion. It’s competing with the feature wall, and combined with the shelving and stool there’s just too much wood in the room.
The wall in the laundry was rather divine, but it felt a step too far in the powder room. The judges weren’t fans of this space either. They didn’t like the bidet or the overall look. The walls were the issue; too muddy. I also strongly dislike the sink.

Suzi and Vonny’s Study, Laundry & Powder Room
I’m glad Shaynna pointed out how outdated and old-fashioned the study felt, because “old man” were the two words that came to mind as soon as I saw the space. Besides the cabinetry, I’d replace pretty much everything else in the space. That green lamp is killing me. Neale hated the rug and said it looked like a bath mat, adding that the girls have lost their edge.
As the judges moved into the laundry and powder room things didn’t improve, though I thought both of the spaces looked nice. I’m rather fond of the tiles in the laundry and I thought that the powder room (with the exception of the chandelier) was luxe too. Perhaps when they started in such an unfortunate study it was hard to go back from there!

I pretty much agree with all your comments Chris – what’s with all the green feature walls – I like a feature wall but most of these spaces are too small to make it work. For me it was all a bit dated except for the off powder room.
Totally agree with you on caro and Kingi mirror. Thought the girls mirror should have taken up entire wall.the styling was bit old
