I loved Jendy on House Rules last year.
That’s Joe and Wendy’s names combined, by the way.
It’s really interesting to see the differing opinions an architect and a mag editor have when they walk through a room. Both of them have different backgrounds and experiences when it comes to construction, interior design and styling, and I found their critiques when judging the spaces last year on House Rules really informative.
With season three about to kick off, I’m wondering how judges Joe Snell and Wendy Moore feel about House Rules 2015 and what they think makes it so special this year.
Despite the premise of the show, Wendy says that handing her keys over to a group of strangers to make over her home is something she’d never have done prior to be involved with House Rules.
“I’d have to say my mind is now changing after seeing some of the amazing transformations,” she laughs. “But it’s still a huge risk entrusting your home to strangers. That’s the wonderful point of difference with this show. We are dealing with contestants’ own homes”.
Joe points out that it’s that personal connection to their homes that makes the show so interesting. And more importantly, the contestants wants and needs for their own space that dictate the points that are delivered at judging.
“The homeowners’ House Rules are the most important element, so I can’t wait to see how the teams use their imagination and design skills to bring it home,” he says.
“They have an emotional connection to their houses and the tension that comes from handing over their keys is just so authentic,” Wendy adds. “It’s amazing to see what can be achieved in just one week”.
So how are Jendy going to approach judging this year and what will they be looking for?
“I’m a pretty honest person. My aim is to be constructive and truthful, but I won’t sugar coat my opinions,” Wendy says. “The feedback may be brutal at times, but the teams will get a much clearer picture of what is expected – as well as how they can improve”.
Joe says that seeing as though this is the third season of the show, the expectations are greater.
“At the end of the day House Rules is a design competition and, as in any competition, those that take the greatest risks and pull them off, win!”.

I found that the judges on House Rules Australia Season 2 are rather impartial to certain couples. They do not take into consideration that the couples only have so much time and money. They really should think about that. Just my opinion.
Why are a journalist/magazine editor and an architect commenting on design? At least The Block and Reno Rumble have designers as judges. I can’t take their judging seriously.
