Another week, another round of on-couch judging from me – the self-appointed and unpaid fourth judge on The Block Glasshouse! This week was all about creating a stunning kitchen, and I must say that the results that had me a little baffled. Here’s my fave kitchen of the lot and why it worked so well.
Neale, Shaynna and Darren were wooed by Simon and Shannon’s kitchen. I’m not saying it’s not amazing, of course, but there were some very real issues. Firstly, I’d never place a stovetop in front of a window that amazing and I’d certainly not place stools in a position that had guests or family members sitting with their backs to you while you were cooking. Imagine yourself working away at the stovetop while your other half was sitting on a stool looking in the opposite direction. It was pretty over practical in this room and it’s for this reason I don’t think it was win-worthy.
Michael and Carlene’s was better in that it felt more user-friendly, although I felt there was a lot of dark colour running against one wall, which didn’t do wonders for bouncing light around the space. In an apartment with a view that’s meant to feel bright, there’s nothing I hate more than pockets that feel dark or gloomy, and this room conjured up that mood for me. I also wan’t a fan of their splashback tiles; a little out of place!

For me, the standout kitchen was Darren and Dee’s. Loved the marble benchtop that carried across to the splashback. It created a sense of fluidity and didn’t break the space up visually. The cabinets were dark, but there were enough light surfaces about that it created balance and kept it feeling like a bright and airy space.
The flooring was probably the most amazing moment for me. I want to roll around on that floor. It is so beautiful and really gave the space some unexpected wow factor. The large sink was also a smart move. This was the perfect form-meets-function space and it was really well thought out and executed. It should have won!
